The product, in the report: 2010 Focus Mares Disc
In fall of 2010 I bought an adult road/cyclocross bicycle with Shimano BR-R505 mechanical disc brakes. It appears that if the brake caliper reaches the end of its range of rotation, the caliper and brake pad actually pop back away from the brake rotor, causing the brake to lose power suddenly and completely. This is different from other brakes that lose stopping power gradually and predictably if pads are not replaced or excess cable length is not adjusted. The problem happens suddenly when you are braking the hardest, which is very unsettling and dangerous. The bike is a 2010 Focus Mares Disc purchased online from Speedgoat cycles, www.speedgoat.com, although the issue doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the particular bike. I wrote to Shimano and the retailer about this issue in February 2011, and again today because today I met another person riding the same bicycle who had replaced the brakes on his bicycle because he had experienced the same problem.
