The product, in the report: Bontrager Satellite City pedals (for bike) Model ZTR02
You sent me a recall notice about Bontrager Satellite City Pedals, but offer unsatisfactory support when making a claim from a local retailer. You say do not ride the bike it the 2Tr02 is installed. I verified that the pedals on my bike match the recall notice. So I call the Trek Local Retailer for a swap out of pedals. To much of my demise, the Local Trek Retailer must take a photograph of the defective pedal, send the picture to Trek, and I must wait a couple of weeks for the two of you, Trek and Local Retailer to resolve the warranty issue. In the meantime, I must wait for you to respond, perhaps several weeks for the process resolution. Totally unacceptable! I expected the Local Retailer to verify the defective pedal, swap out to an approved safety pedal and off I go in a matter of a couple hours or overnight at the most. However, the current procedures require me to stay off the bike and wait for Trek and the Local retailer to resolve who is at fault before I receive adequate remedy. Who really cares about the in-store credit of $20. Just send me $20 ASAP and I’ll go on-line to [REDACTED] and order a pair of pedals that are safe for operation and forget about the weeks it take for you and the Local Retailer to resolve the issue.

The product, in the report: Bontrager race lite bike wheel
I have a Trek bycicle that has Bontrager Race Lite wheels on it, from 2005. The bike has less than 1500 miles on it (not much as far as bikes go) and has been garraged or in dry storage the whole time it has been owned. The spoke nipples on the wheels have cracked and corroded. They haven’t been exposed to toxic chemicals, bad weather, or unusual conditions, or over used to true the wheels (wheels have only been trued two times) they just corrded fron the inside out. Normal spoke nipples don’t do this, and will last the lifetime of the bike. I have switched wheels when I noticed to avoid a catastrofic crash. I first noticed them when inspecting the bike in Dec 2012. Since looking into this, have found several other people who have had the same issue with bontrager race lite wheels spoke nipples, so I felt it was worth reporting.

The product, in the report: Bontrage Racelite XL wheels that came equipped on a 2009 Trek Madone 5.9 racing bicycle with S/N WTU296T064D
In 2009 I purchased and high end racing bicycle from Trek. The model is the 2009 Trek Madone 6.5 equipped with Bontrager Racelite XL wheels. I used the bike for about 2,500 miles when in 2010 while getting ready for a weekly club ride, I notice cracks around several spoke holes on the rear wheel rim. The cracks were severe enough to significantly lift and distort the surface of the rim. Needless to say, I chose not to ride that evening. The bike shop that I bought the bike from promptly reported the failure to Trek and within a few days I had a new wheel. I recently was browsing and popular cycling forum (www.roadbikereviews.com) and read a posting about the same wheels failing during a ride where the rider was thrown from his bike. Post crash inspection of the wheels revealed corrosion and cracking of spoke nipples. Several other posters also complained of noticing corrosion of the nipples during regular maintenance and cleaning, many of which were at low mileage. A further search regarding wheel rim and/or spoke failures resulted in numerous postings by others who have experienced the similar defects. I suggest CPSC open an investigation.

The product, in the report: Front and rear wheels for bicycle
I have submitted a warranty claim to TREK to replace Bontrager Race X Lite wheels that have failed due to dangerous design. Cracks have appeared along the rim of front and rear wheels between the spoke insert locations, making it impossible to true the wheels. If wheels go out of alignment the rider may be unable to control the bike, and crash. I use this bike in competition and fear that it will fail at high speed.
I filed warranty claim at TREK store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which was denied. I also complained via TREK online customer service line. I have followed up with formal letter to the CEO of TREK, but not yet heard a reply.

The product, in the report: Bicycle hub/wheel rims
Caller was riding his bicycle when the hub flange broke which released two spokes which caused the wheel not to be true. It is a good centimeter out of true.
Rear wheel locked- rider avoided a crash due to land speed at time of failure. Rider/caller had to get off bike.
These Race X Lite Wheels, Hub flange manufactured by DT Swiss but without the DT Swiss logo for the Bontrager hubs.
Caller located another report at saferproducts regarding this same hub flange and would like this flange investigated and recalled.
Rider/caller called [REDACTED] at Trek Tech Support, who acknowledged this as a known problem since 2006 or 2007 and added that the rims will crack around the spoke holes, also. He started that they continued to distribute to consumers the faulty wheels through 2010 (secretly and verbally to dealers) extending warranty to 5 years. This call indicates the need to recall the entire wheel set (front and rear).

The product, in the report: Bontrager Racelite rear wheel with DT Swiss hub. 12 spoke/hole wheel hub. Purchased with my Trek 5200 bike.
DT Swiss hub on my rear Bontrager Racelite wheel broke for no reason. Luckily, it was at the end of a ride. If it had happened at high speeds, it could have caused serious injuries. It is a known problem by Bontrager (incidents are reported all over the web), but their dealers claim they have stopped replacing the defective products.
