The product, in the report: Folding recumbent bicycle
This Bike Friday folding recumbent bicycle has light use, but had multiple failures that led to 3 accidents. The first failure involved a breakage of a seat support. This support was made out of unprotected aluminum that had been hand drilled. The aluminum had oxidized and the metal broke when I hit a bump. The second accident occurred when a quick release failed and the bicycle collapsed. The final accident occurred when the bicycle broke in half.
The bicycle was manufactured 8 years ago, but has been stored in a dry place and was not used very much. It had 800 miles on it. I personally know 2 other people with this bicycle and one had similar problems with the seat and with the quick release. I also asked an engineer friend who looked at it and concluded that it was not a good design. There should be a lock on the quick release. There should also be some sort of coating on the aluminum so that it does not oxidize.
