First aid Made Jun 2, 2018, sent to the company Jun 11, 2018, published by CPSC Jun 25, 2018
The product, in the report: BCA MT 20 by Kent, boys bike with gears, blue, white and black
One year ago, we bought the boy’s MT 20 from Walmart North for approximately $100 (after tax) for our then 9 year old son to ride greater distances with us on the bike paths. It hasn’t been what we hoped for because our son finds it difficult to change the gears, but overall, it works okay.
I check my kids’ bikes every few weeks to be sure things are secure and am good about basic maintenance and upkeep, especially since the bikes hang unused in the garage during our long MN winters.
That said, on Saturday, May 26th, we were biking a paved trail. My son was ahead of me going at a pretty fast pace. Suddenly his right pedal broke away and he lost control, falling and injuring himself. Thankfully he did not break any bones, but had some significant road rash and scuffs to his helmet that we will now need to replace.
I was confused as to why this happened since the bike is only a year old and I had just checked for loosening screws and performed beginning of the season maintenance a few short weeks prior.
Upon inspection, I discovered that the problem was nothing we could have controlled, but rather is the fault of the pedal design. The metal screw is merely glued into the main part of the pedal, or into that hole you see in the photo. That is not adequate nor is it safe.
