No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 4, 2013, sent to the company Nov 12, 2013, published by CPSC Dec 4, 2013
The product, in the report: This is a hydraulic disk brake lever, hose, and brake calipers.
The Avid Elixir CR Mag (and other similar products) brake lever has a service setting that extends the reach of the lever beyond its normal range and affords improved access the reach adjustment set screw. The service setting is realized by pulling the lever away from the handlebar until it pops. The amount of force required to engage the service setting has decreased over time, to the point where the service setting is periodically engaged during the normal action of riding. This creates a dangerous situation - since when the lever is outside the normal operating range it is not immediately accessible to the biker and requires the rider to release the handlebar to re-position the lever in the normal operating range. This situations occurs on both two sets of brakes on separate bikes.
This is especially dangerous for adverse event braking on downhills, in situations with cars, pedestrians or other moving obstacles. The frequency of these occurrences is increasing.
