The product, in the report: Delux Three Bike Trunck Mounted Carrier
Brand of item: Allan Sports
Model: 103DB Trunk Mounted Bicycle Carrier “Deluxe Three Bike Trunk Mounted Carrier”
Car that rack was mounted on: 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis
Number of bikes carried: 3 Position and weight of bikes: Bike closest to car’s trunk------------37.0 lbs Bike in rack’s center position---------33.4 lbs Bike furthest from trunk lid/bumper---25.4 lbs Place of purchase/Price: Walmart in Columbia, MD/ $50.0
Incident: The bike rack collapsed while transporting the three bikes. My speed was ~15mph. It collapsed when I hit a slight pot hole in the road. The pot hole was not excessive and was in line with what one occasionally finds while driving. The rack was installed on the car per the manufacturer’s directions. The top straps were connected to the metal edge of the trunk (where it meets the rear window). The lower straps were connected to the metal frame support below the bumper. The “arms” which held the three bikes were horizontal. All straps were very taunt. The rack comes pre-assembled right out of the box. The only thing the consumer has to do is to snap the two chromed “tension bars” into holes in the bike frame. The two “tension bars” expand the frame and hold it open much like the horizontal bar in the letter “A”. When I hit the bump in the road the two “tension bars” slid/pulled back out of the holes in the frame, causing the frame to collapse. I stopped the car, and after removing the bikes was able to snap the “tension bars” back into place. After snapping the “tension bars” back in place, I inspected the straps and found them to be very taunt. The max allowable weight for three bikes on this rack is 100 lbs. My bikes weigh 95.8 lbs (total). In a static situation this bike rack appears very sturdy, but it can collapse when subjected to an impact load due to a bump in the road. Had my situation happened on a highway, I might not have been able to stop prior to losing the bikes. Someone could have been killed. The impact may have been made more severe due to the Grand Marquis having such a long wheel base and the long distance from it’s rear tires to the end of it’s trunk. Please investigate this design and ensure that it is redesigned and then qualification tested for typical impact loading due to road conditions.
