  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Jun 5, 2026, sent to the company Jun 12, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 30, 2026

The product, in the report: The Late 1990s early 2000s Specialized Hard Rock AND Rock Hopper mountain bicycle frames. Purple, Black, light blue and black, Several different years and modles have been seen with this defect. I personally have scrapped 4 to 6 of them for the parts because of this defect.

On Several occasions over the last 20 years I have obtained Various Specialized Rock Hopper and Hard Rock Mountain Bikes used. After getting them home and starting the restoration/tune up process I tip the bicycle over to get a better look at the chain and test the bicycle’s functionality. I do this because of shop space limitations which does not allow for a traditional repair stand set up. My reason for reporting the older Specialized Mountain Bicycles from the late 1990s and into early 2000s is because through the years I have had several that have had to be scrapped for parts as I deemed unfit to use because of a defect/flaw in the frame material. The Defect is that any bicycles left outside in the elements can accumulate water in the frame, When this happens and is left outside even if under cover during the winter time, that water accumulation freezes to ice and expands which splits the frame. This accumulation has always been seen on the lower rear right tubing directly behind the drive crank. So the split is always seen some where near there. Some were so severely split and expanded that the frame interefered with the operation of the crankset ie you could not pedal because the sprockets would then hit the frame or were stuck hitting the frame and could not be moved. I have not personally had an injuries due to these defects simply because I did not deem the bike safe enough to trust trying to use it with a split frame. In reality if it were your last mode of transportation and you desperately needed a bicycle to ride you Probably could use vice grips to pinch the metal together to ride it and in some cases be ok but there may always be that one person that doesn’t realize the defect is there and takes it for an adventure and jumps it and then further damages the frame at which point Might then be an issue of risk of injury or death. This is not a very noticeable flaw from the stand point of standing by it and thinking about going for a ride. This is a must tip bicycle upside down and inspect, in most cases. I am filing this report because after texting with Specialized to ask if the frame was warrantied their response was for me to take it to a shop and have the shop submit a warranty claim. Due to a few other warranty claims the shop no longer likes to see Me coming so I will not bother to try and submit a claim. And the other 4 or 5 frames that were affected were already long recycled at the metal facility many years ago before I realized of the warranties. Since I got no immediate help from the company without having to jump through hoops with a shop and seeing this defect on several older mtn bike frames I thought it was time to report it. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Front reflector mounted on mountain bike -- Specialized Carve Comp 29

My daughter was riding her mountain bike down a trail, ran into a patch of gravel and fell. As she fell, her chin hit the front reflector, snapped the plastic support and cut open her chin. I heard afterwards that this is a known hazard and a good idea to remove the front reflector. I believe bicycle manufacturers should not be required to put front reflectors on bicycles. Front reflectors are dangerous in a crash and seem to have limited usefulness. A front reflector would only be useful if someone were riding at night without a light on the wrong side of the road, which is illegal and avoidable.

Bought a Specialized P1 which had an incorrectly manufactured frame. The rear wheel offset is wrong so that the bike turns slightly left all the time. When my son who I bought it for jumped it (it is a bike made for that), it turned on take-off, rotated uncontrollably in the air, causing him to crash. No serious injury but I’ve been told that Specialized made a whole production run like this. I was told this by the dealer where I bought the bike. I’ve tried to get Specialized to fix the bike - they gave us a new frame but we had to pay to have it changed ourselves.

The product, in the report: Specialized Rockerhopper Mountain Bike

I was riding a Specialized Rockhopper bicycle, when the right side crank cracked off. I was riding up a hill, and because of the sheer of the crank, I totally lost my footing and crashed to the street. Fortunately, there were no cars in the roadway, or else I could have been hit by a car. As it was, I suffered scratches on my elbow, and knee. I also had several pulled muscles, which have taken a few weeks and am still not 100%. I did not need medical attention.

This occurred on September 12, 2011.

I have had this bike about 5 years now, and have ridden it about 6500 miles before the part failure.

I have since found out that the failed part is Shimano FC-MC12, was subject to recall for this type of failure. I only found out about the problem when I was reserarching options for part replacement.

I have taken the parts to my local bike store, to see if Shimano is still honering the recall replacement of parts.
