The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Nov 13, 2023, sent to the company Nov 16, 2023, published by CPSC Dec 1, 2023

The product, in the report: Schwinn Twinn tandem mountain bike, gray. Model: S7962AZ.

I am reporting a brake failure (both front and back brakes) that appears to be due to a design flaw in the brakes used for the Schwinn Twinn tandem mountain bike, model S7962AZ. The brakes failed while my wife and I were riding the bike. This could have resulted in a serious injury, but only minor injuries resulted; although the brakes failed while riding down a steep hill, I was able to stop the bike by dragging my feet on the pavement. In doing so, I did sustain a minor back injury, from the difficulty involved in getting the bike to stop. I examined the brakes closely to see why the failure occurred. The brake is a cable-pull brake: you pull a brake lever mounted to the handlebar, which pulls a cable, and that cable is connected to lever at the brake. The lever rotates, and closes the caliper, causing the brake pads to press against the disc rotor to stop the bike. The design flaw occurs when the brake pads become worn. Specifically, when the brake pads wear down, the caliper must close more in order for contact to occur. In order to close the caliper more, the brake lever must be pulled further, causing the lever at the brake to rotate further, which closes the caliper. When the lever at the brake rotates past a certain amount, it reaches the end of its threads, and “pops” out, completely disengaging the brake. This happened in both the front and the rear brake, leaving us with no way to stop. I can reproduce this problem if you need to see it demonstrated, and can send in a video. This problem only shows up when the bike has been used a lot, as the brake pads need to be worn down. However, once this happens, the bike is very dangerous, and I’m worried that someone could be seriously injured unless Schwinn addresses the problem.

The product, in the report: Schwinn 29” santis men’s mt bike

I was riding a newly purchased schwinn santis 29 “ men’s mt bike. I was thrown from the bike after a small twig bounced off the road and lodged in the gear mechanism/ plastic sprocket. The design and cheap materials( plastic/ tin) used in the gear assembly allowed it to collapse/ bend and jam into the back wheel and gear assembly to become lodged in the spokes of the wheel. This bike is severely flawed. The gear assembly is way too close to the ground and spokes of the back wheel. This cheap materials in the gear assembly further compromise the rider of this bike. This bike is a potential death trap. Should this have happened to me when a car was present I would have been severely injured or dead and possibly the driver of the car injured/ killed. This model is hazardous and should be recalled. And Schwinn fined for gross negligence in design. Thank you.
