I recently bought a tent (Avalanche Outdoors Backpack Tent - 2-Person, 3-Season Item #72YPF) and used it in a rain storm near [REDACTED]. I slept in it most of the night (probably 6 to 7 hours), then woke up anoxic. I feel I could have died from oxygen starvation. I sat up in the tent and instantly lost my breath like I had run a few miles. I couldn’t draw a full breath and my son started breathing rapidly. I reached over him to open the tent door and woke him up. He told me that he couldn’t breathe. I opened the door and the oxygen filled the tent and we could breathe again. This tent has no windows. I doesn’t have a rain fly. It has some sort of waterproof material or treatment that makes the fabric unbreathable. I put the fabric up to my face and tried to breath in, but it was like plastic. No air could move through the material. This is a death trap just waiting for someone to sleep too long in it and never wake up. We slept the next night with the door open and packed out. I don’t think that we will have any long term damage from this experience. Perhaps we lost a few brain cells from being anoxic all night. I just don’t want someone else to get hurt.
