No one hurt Made Jul 27, 2026, sent to the company Aug 3, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 17, 2026
The product, in the report: Onewheel Pint, made by Future Motion, Inc. of Santa Cruz, California. Serial number 2028162441. Manufactured July 2020. It is a self-balancing electric skateboard, sometimes called a personal electric vehicle or an electric board sport product. It is ridden standing up, sideways, with one foot on each side of a single large wheel in the middle of the board. Physical description. The board is roughly 27 inches long, about 11 inches wide and about 8 inches tall, and weighs about 23 pounds. It has one wide pneumatic tire, roughly 10.5 inches in diameter, mounted in the center of the board through a hub motor. On each side of the wheel is a foot pad, one of which has a pressure sensor that tells the board a rider is standing on it. The frame is aluminum rail with a plastic bumper at each end. Mine is sand colored beige, with a black tire and black foot pads. There is an LED light bar visible above the front foot pad that shows power and battery state. The board carries a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack of about 148 watt hours, housed in a sealed enclosure under the rail on one side of the wheel. The controller module, which contains the main circuit board, is housed in a matching sealed enclosure under the rail on the other side. The power button and the charge port are located on the controller side. It charges from a wall outlet with a supplied charger brick. The board is self-balancing. It uses gyroscopes and an accelerometer to keep the rider level, drives forward when the rider leans forward, and slows when the rider leans back. Top speed is about 16 miles per hour and range is about 6 to 8 miles per charge. The part that failed is the power button assembly, which is a small push button mounted through the wall of the sealed controller enclosure and held in place from the inside by a nut threaded onto the plastic body of the button. On my board that nut is metal. The button is wired to the main circuit board inside the same enclosure, which also contains the connector that carries battery power to the board.
The power button assembly on this Onewheel Pint failed structurally inside the sealed controller enclosure and released a metal fastener into a compartment containing an unfused lithium-ion battery power connection. The freed fastener came to rest across that connection and short circuited it. The controller board was destroyed and the battery pack no longer accepts a charge.
On inspection of the controller enclosure I found three things.
First, the plastic male thread on the power button body had fractured. It did not merely loosen. The threaded plastic broke and released the metal female nut that secures the button.
Second, the freed metal nut had migrated inside the enclosure and was resting across the contacts of the battery power connector, with corresponding marks at the contacts consistent with a short circuit.
Third, the power button wiring was torn.
The board operated normally and was charged successfully on the same day, July 26, 2026. It then failed completely. It will not power on. The LED light bar does not illuminate at all, not even briefly. The battery no longer accepts a charge. The charger does not change state whether or not it is connected to the board. The wheel spins freely by hand and the charge port pins are undamaged, so the failure is electrical and originates at the shorted battery connector.
The board has approximately 400 lifetime miles. It has never been in a collision of any kind. It has not been modified, was not opened before this inspection, has not been submerged, and has not been exposed to weather beyond normal riding.
WHY I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT
The hazard is not that the board broke. The hazard is that a conductive metal fastener was able to come loose inside a sealed enclosure that contains an unfused high current lithium-ion battery connection, and then bridge that connection. That is a short circuit directly across a lithium battery pack. In this case the result was destroyed electronics. The same event can produce thermal runaway, and it happens inside a sealed compartment where a rider cannot see or smell it developing.
This is a foreseeable and reportedly common failure rather than a freak event. The power button nut coming loose inside the Onewheel Pint controller enclosure is widely documented by owners. Published owner repair guides describe it as the most common problem with that enclosure, warn specifically that the freed metal nut can dangle on the power button leads and short components on the board, and report boards arriving from the factory with the nut already loose. The common owner remedy is to glue the nut in place, which indicates owners are compensating for a known design weakness rather than performing maintenance.
I further understand that the power button assembly Future Motion currently sells as a replacement part uses a plastic nut rather than the metal nut fitted to my board, which would eliminate this shorting mechanism. I have asked Future Motion to confirm this in writing and have not received an answer. If it is correct, then the hazard was identified and corrected in the replacement part, while boards already in service, including mine, retain the original metal nut and their owners were given no notice of the hazard or of the fix.
CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURER
I reported this to Future Motion on July 27, 2026 under support ticket [REDACTED]. Future Motion responded the same day. The response stated that the board was manufactured in July 2020 and is therefore out of warranty by age, and that the original warranty is non-transferable, so a secondhand owner is not covered. The response also stated that the controller module can sustain internal damage of this kind if the board has suffered extensive or repeat collisions. This board has been in no collision, and a collision does not fracture the threaded plastic body of a power button and then deposit the freed nut onto the battery power connector.
The warranty position may be correct as a matter of warranty, but it does not address the safety issue. Boards of this generation remain in service and are frequently resold, and their current owners have no way to know that a fastener inside the battery compartment can come free.
WHAT I THINK CPSC SHOULD EXAMINE
One. How many reports Future Motion has received of Onewheel Pint power button hardware coming free inside the controller enclosure.
Two. Whether the power button assembly was revised from a metal nut to a plastic nut, when that change was made, and whether it was made for safety reasons.
Three. Whether owners of boards built with the original metal nut were ever notified.
Four. Whether the battery power connection inside the controller enclosure is protected against a short caused by loose conductive hardware.
Future Motion and the Onewheel Pint were subject to the September 29, 2023 CPSC recall of approximately 300,000 Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards. That recall concerned loss of balance control, which is a different hazard from the one reported here.
The board is preserved intact and unmodified and is available for inspection by CPSC. I have photographs of the fractured plastic thread, the metal nut resting on the battery power connector, and the torn button wiring.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 4, 2023, sent to the company Oct 10, 2023, published by CPSC Oct 24, 2023
The product, in the report: Onewheel XR. Guys, I’m not really sure how to pull all this data that you’re asking for...
Hi.
I’ve been an avid rider of the OneWheel, made but FutureMotion. Specifically, I have an XR. I have over 1000 miles ridden across multiple devices. I myself have purchased three XRs.
I’ve taken my licks on these boards - many of which have been my own fault, so I want to be clear about those wipeouts.
My complaint is not “nosedive” in and of itself, as I do understand that the device has limits and thresholds based on rider weight, wind, elevation and grade factors, charge level, etc. My complaint is a specific scenario that FM refuses to acknowledge and I believe continues to be buried under 1) a financial burden for the customer and 2) gas lighting individuals.
I was riding my board around a 75% charge and going up a 1-2% grade rode (absolutely minimal for the eye to perceive, but a slow elevation incline). I believe I was going roughly 10 MPH. Mind you, my board was under warranty at this time.
My board outright failed. We’re talking just DIED. Zero pushback. Zero physical feedback. I was riding with my wife and she witnessed this - and her observation was “you didn’t do anything, it just stopped working on you”. The end result was completely flaying my skin on the asphalt and a concussion. I still have the helmet with the gouge marks on it.
If I were riding a bike and the forks failed, the vendor would lose their mind and offer to fix it free of charge. FM doesn’t work this way.
Future Motion said the only way they could diagnose this issue was for me to send my board it, at my burden, for $80.00 USD. 1. This is a massive financial deterrent that should not exist when a user experiences extreme physical injury. 2. FM removed the capability to provide remote diagnosis over time forcing me as a consumer to have to ship vs. sending a simple data file. I believe you guys have records of their firmware updates and app updates doing so. 3. The only finding I had was after I crashed, my phone app showed an issue on the charge, yet simultaneously reported that the charge was fine. Seriously?
I want to focus on the cells. I believe that there are a some batteries that fail - maybe batch related, maybe a charge issue, maybe something else. WHEN they fail, there is no recourse and the rider suffers personal and extreme injury. I would know, as here in Albuquerque we had a rider DIE. (I don’t have context on the how or why, but come on, really?)
Aggregate issues like mine, plus documented problems with GT boards ghosting with the FSB, pint boards pinching and breaking their internal wirings - and their outright refusal to acknowledge that. I had to seek 3rd party independent diagnosis, which now of course FM won’t support - the end result was a faulty BMS, but because I took the board apart I now have no recourse after being told they wouldn’t listen to me.
Haptic feedback is a good start for newbies and for overall helpfulness of the consumer, but it does absolutely nothing to address critical intrinsic issues with the underlying electronics, failing battery cells, failing BMS’s and FSB’s, and haptic feedback is not going to solve cases like mine.
THESE BOARDS HURT PEOPLE. FM needs to be held accountable for their business practices. We all understand there are implicit risks like any other sport, but come on.
How can a company show people doing hand stands without a helmet or protective gear on the main website? How can they show women in bikinis “cruising” down the road with no protection? How can the place a financial burden on someone that just dropped A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS on the product to simply diagnose. “Oh we put a warning”. Okay. Sure.
I would encourage you to see the stories coming out on [REDACTED] . There is a plethora of people describing stories like mine, detailing broken bones, boards that fail for no reason, and antagonistic behavior from Future Motion.
I also find it hilarious that this “recall” is restricted to six hours a day to minimize their willingness/want to to work with customers.
I hope this helps someone from dying, because we had one death here in my local town and it sucks.

Emergency room Made Sep 29, 2023, sent to the company Oct 4, 2023, published by CPSC Oct 19, 2023
The product, in the report: OneWheel by Future Motion, Inc.
Hello. I recently received an email from Future Motion, Inc. regarding a voluntary recall affecting their OneWheel devices. Future Motion contacted me because I am a registered owner. For me, this is too long in the making. I was riding my OneWheel back in the spring/summer of 2017, in Cleveland, Ohio, when the software failed and pitched me off the board onto cement at a high speed (probably nearing the 20 mph limit on the device). I was wearing full safety gear (helmet, elbow pads, knee pads), so luckily I did not sustain any major head injuries (I got a concussion). Unfortunately, I did suffer a torn rotator cuff, torn biceps tendon, and a bone fleck in my upper arm. I required surgery at my local [REDACTED] Medical Center to repair the injuries. I had complications from the surgery and as a result I now have a partially disabled left shoulder, reduced quality of life (my ability to do weight training, ordinary lifts, etc.), and large surgical scars.

The product, in the report: Future motion onewheel pint motorized skateboard. Dark blue and dark grey
My husband was using the onewheel motorized skateboard. He was riding it forward and was propelled forward off of it and hit his head on the road. He was unconsious for 4 minutes and when he woke up he didn’t know where he was, who he was and could barely speak. He suffered a subdural hemorrhage and a subarachnoid hemorrhage. He also injured his shoulder that he previously had surgery on and is having trouble with his left foot. He is out of work and was in ICU and now is going to inpatient rehab. He has excruciating headaches. It is still too early to tell any lasting effects as it has only been 2 weeks

Hurt, care not known Made Apr 5, 2023, sent to the company Apr 10, 2023, published by CPSC May 1, 2023
The product, in the report: One Wheel Pint
While riding the one wheel pint, it shut off completely without warning, propelling me forward. Luckily I was going slow so I only got some scrapes and bruises but could have been worse if I was riding faster. One wheel mislead me in their response to consumer reports making it seem like these reported injuries were the result of people riding the one wheel incorrectly or riding fast while ignoring push back. That was not the case. This just completely shut off without warning so there was no way you could catch yourself. There was no push back to indicate slowing down. I’ve followed all safety protocols they provided, including watching their safety videos, and practicing. There is no way you could avoid falling when the board shuts off without warning. This is a product defect, not user error.

The product, in the report: OneWheel, Pint X
My son was riding his 11-month-old OneWheel Pint X to school. Data indicates he was only going about 10 MPH. The board spontaneously “glitched” and abruptly stopped. The OneWheel instantly nosedived and launched my son to the tarmac, resulting in road rash and a fractured right radius at the wrist.
OneWheel attempted to claim all sorts of ways my son was at fault, such as riding “downhill” and not understanding how that works (our street is only a slight decline AND he’d ridden on our street hundreds of times); that he was going too fast and doesn’t know what pushback is (he was only going 10 MPG and there was no pushback); and that his feet weren’t properly placed (they were).
