The fire appeared to have originated from an electrical scooter (YOLOWAY) battery pack. The battery pack appears to have ignited and spread to the rear tire and an adjacent HVAC control. Flammable drippings from the tire and HVAC control on the wall ignited surrounding towels on the floor. The scooter charging unit was not plugged into a wall outlet and the battery appeared to be disconnected at the main body and steer handle.
The Fire Marshal, and Fire Captain spoke with the involved individual at 22:56 on 11-22-24. She stated that the scooted started malfunctioning at 1100 on 11-22-24 while riding it in the rain. She left the scooter outside for approximately 3 hours before retrieving the scooter and walking it home as it still didn’t function.
The scooter was placed in her room. She stated that the scooter charging unit was not plugged in and the battery was disconnected from the controller. She went to eat at 21:40. She was notified by other residents on her floor that smoke was coming from her room. She came back to her room at 22:00 and opened the door. She observed smoke and an orange hue from the room but no heat. She closed the door, evacuated the building and called 911.
