The product, in the report: Product Name: NIU KQi3 Max Foldable Electric Kick Scooter Brand: NIU Technologies Color: Space Gray (with characteristic red wiring and red accents on the brake calipers) Physical Specifications: Weight: Approximately 46.3 lbs (21 kg). Unfolded Dimensions: 46.3” (L) x 21.3” (W) x 47.2” (H) Folded Dimensions: 46.3” (L) x 21.3” (W) x 19.8” (H) Tires: 9.5-inch self-healing tubeless pneumatic tires. Frame Material: Aerospace-grade aluminum. Technical Identification: [REDACTED] Serial Number (SN): K3T0X1B3937A1WPJ Motor: 450W rated / 900W peak power. Distinguishing Features: The scooter features a prominent circular LED “Halo” headlight on the front of the stem. The failure occurred specifically at the folding hinge mechanism where the main structural steel locking bolt is located. This unit was purchased via the Amazon Renewed program, but all structural components and the failed bolt are original NIU-manufactured hardware.
Incident Overview: While operating an electric kick scooter at a moderate speed on a flat, paved surface, the primary stem-locking bolta critical structural componentexperienced a catastrophic mechanical failure and sheared completely in half. This caused the steering column to collapse forward without warning.
Product and Usage: The product being used was an NIU KQi3 Max electric scooter. It was being operated by a single rider for routine transportation. The scooter was being used exactly as intended by the manufacturer at the time of the hardware failure.
Injuries and Mechanism: The sudden collapse of the steering column resulted in the rider being thrown forward over the handlebars. The rider impacted the pavement head-first and sustained a medically documented acute concussion involving a loss of consciousness. Additional injuries included significant abrasions to the right knee and right elbow. A full-face helmet was worn; it sustained a heavy impact and was structurally compromised during the crash.
Reason for Reporting: The report is being filed due to a life-threatening structural defect in the stem-locking mechanism. The failure of a load-bearing steel bolt during normal operation represents a significant safety risk to the general public. Furthermore, the manufacturer has attempted to disclaim liability for the failure of this original hardware component because the unit was purchased through a “Renewed” (refurbished) program.
