The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Lionel Reading Industrial Engine (6-18926)

We recently purchased a Lionel Reading Industrial Engine (6-18926). We have a Lionel fast-track running around our young son’s room. The track is nailed down and perfectly level. A train has never jumped off of this track. We ran this engine twice and on the second use, the engine slowed down, stopped and then caught on fire. This filled our son’s room with smoke. I’m a product designer myself, and I realize that no product should melt down under these very normal circumstances. I opened the train and I can observe that the wires were not tied back and allowed to touch the heat dissipating surface of the PNP transistors. This caused the insulation to melt and short multiple wires together, resulting in fire inside the unit.
