  1. Hurt, no treatment

The product, in the report: Kinder King Pretend Play Kitchen Wooden Toy Set for Kids, White color. A play kitchen toy for children ages 3 and up, with sounds, oven, microwave, sink, stovetop, and utensils. Made primarily of MDF board with plastic components. Shipping carton dimensions were approximately 15 by 7.9 by 39.2 inches, gross weight 42.3 lbs, net weight 38.1 lbs.

I purchased a Kinder King Pretend Play Kitchen Wooden Toy Set from Target.com, delivered to my home. This is a play kitchen for children, made primarily of MDF board and plastic components. The outer shipping box arrived damaged. When I picked up the box to carry it inside, I immediately noticed a strong plastic or chemical odor coming from inside the packaging, strong enough to cause nasal and throat discomfort within minutes of handling it. Because of the odor, I did not assemble the product. I returned the unopened item to a Target store. The store employee processing the return was also able to smell the strong chemical odor coming through the box from across the counter, confirming this was not an isolated sensitivity on my part. I also found another verified customer review of the same product on Target.com describing a similar but more severe experience. After assembling the same kitchen set, the reviewer experienced throat irritation that led to a sinus infection, and reported that the product continued off-gassing a strong chemical odor for over a week even after being aired outdoors. This suggests the odor may be linked to formaldehyde-based adhesives used in the MDF board construction, which is not consistently tested or regulated the way plastic components in toys are. Lead and phthalates in plastic parts are covered under CPSIA and ASTM F963 standards. Composite wood formaldehyde emissions are a separate and less enforced standard. Product name, Kinder King Pretend Play Kitchen Wooden Toy Set for Kids, White, sold on Target.com. Target item number, TCIN 1002176523. UPC 757837713206. The outer shipping carton was labeled Made in China, SKU ETD041WH, PO E2SYM034, carton size 15.7 by 9.39 by 2 inches, gross weight 42.3 lbs, net weight 38.1 lbs. Note the SKU printed on the box does not exactly match the product retail listing name, which may indicate this SKU or tooling is shared across multiple color variants of the same kitchen set sold under the Kinder King brand.
