How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 1 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 28, 2012, sent to the company Mar 6, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 20, 2012

The product, in the report: multi-use ratchet with nylon straps - each consists of two pieces (box of four sets) for tying, binding, hoisting, etc.

We were removing a platform hanging by four upright boards from ceiling rafters. Our use involved attaching the straps to support the weight of the platform while the upright boards were removed one at a time and then, using the ratchet to gradually lower the platform to the floor. After all but one of the straps had been removed and the entire platform was hanging by a single one, mechanism let go, causing the platform to rapidly fall and crash to the floor. After this, I did some tests and found that all of the ratchet mechanisms were prone to such failure.

The lifting mechanism worked fine but the gradual release failed. I do not know why, and have no time at the moment to find out. There were no specific warnings on the package. These are prominently displayed near the check-out stands at Home Depot: obviously, the results of using these Chinese-made product could be disastrous.

Please note that while the incident occurred at the below address, that space is now empty and we have relocated across the same street.
