The product, in the report: Grill brush http://www.mrbarbq.com/brushes/oversized-triple-action-grill-brush-detail
I purchased a grill brush from Bed Bath and Beyond in August 2013. http://www.mrbarbq.com/brushes/oversized-triple-action-grill-brush-detail
On September 28, my husband prepared the grill. He used the brush to scrub off the old food. He wiped it down with a cloth He used a paper towel with oil to oil the grill He turned on the grill.
I ate a piece of chicken and immediately felt sharp stabbing pain in my throat.
September 28 at 6pm I went to Vassar Hospital ER and had an XRay that did not reveal anything. I was dismissed. September 30 I returned to Vassar Hospital ER and had a CT scan. The CT showed wire in my throat. I was transferred to Westchester Medical Center where I was hospitalized for four days and had two surgeries that were unsuccesful. On October 17, I had a surgery at NY Presbyterian/Weill and they were able to recover the wire bristle from my esophagus. It had perforated my esophagus.

Emergency room Made Sep 3, 2013, sent to the company Sep 10, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 24, 2013
The product, in the report: Wire grill brush - plastic base. Mr. Bar-B-Q Double Header Grill Brush Item No: 06068SSX Patent D400,328
Cleaned hot grill with the grill brush. A small bristle was left behind, but I didn’t see it. Cooked food on the grill and the food picked up the bristle. I ate the food and the bristle was lodged in my throat. Required a trip to the emergency room to have it removed.
When the brush is used on a hot grill, heat is conducted through the wire bristle to the plastic base. The plastic surrounded the bristle melts and releases the bristle.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jul 11, 2012, sent to the company Aug 21, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 5, 2012
The product, in the report: Wire bristle three point grill cleaning brush
July 11th, 2012 around 8:30AM caller heated bread with drippings that had been grilled the day before to prepare a sandwich for his wife and himself.
Around 9:00AM Pacific Time on July 11, 2012 the caller’s wife contacted him via cellphone asking if he was alright and to warn him that bristles from the brush used to clean the grill the day before had gotten into the drippings and a bristle had lodged in the soft upper tissue in the roof of her mouth.
She removed the bristle and at this point appears not to have been harmed, however she will keep an eye on the area.
The bristles of the brush are very fine and cannot be seen easily.
The caller and his wife are reporting to alert public to be aware of this potential safety hazard, especially children and the elderly.
He has notified newspapers and television stations. There is a warning on the handle of the brush stating that the bristles may come out.
Callers have not contacted manufacturer yet but do intend to contact them.
