The product, in the report: 27-pack of Berkeley Jensen Scrub Sponges

    Dear CPSC Information Officer,

I am writing to formally report a consumer product safety concern regarding Berkeley Jensen Heavy Duty Scrub Sponges (27-Count Pack), which are distributed by BJs Wholesale Club.

Below are the details of the product and the safety issue:

Product Name: Berkeley Jensen Heavy Duty Sponge 27CT

Retailer / Location of Purchase: BJs Wholesale Club, Salem, New Hampshire

Incident / Defect Description: Upon using this product, I noticed that the sponges continuously disintegrate and shed small, sharp black particles into the dishwater and onto the surfaces of plates, utensils, and cookware during regular dishwashing. I am currently on the third sponge of the package, and this issue occurs consistently with every use.

Safety Hazard: Because these synthetic and chemical particles adhere to food-contact surfaces even after rinsing, there is a high risk of accidental ingestion by my family. The manufacturer (Spongezz Team) responded to my complaint claiming these are “binder residues” from the manufacturing process and are safe for human contact. However, because the shedding is perpetual and does not wash away after the initial rinse, I am deeply concerned about the long-term toxicity and chemical health risks of ingesting these materials.

I have retained the remaining faulty sponges, the original packaging, and photographic evidence of the shedding for your investigation.

I request that the CPSC reviews this batch for manufacturing defects or unsafe chemical binders to ensure other consumers are not unknowingly exposing their families to these particles.

Thank you for your time and for protecting consumer health.

    Sincerely,

    [REDACTED]
