The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made May 18, 2024, sent to the company May 22, 2024, published by CPSC Jun 6, 2024

The product, in the report: It is a medium sized transparent teal glass with vertical ridges all along the outside.

I purchased IKEA vardagen glasses on April 11 2024. A month later, one of the glasses spontaneously exploded without reason. Nothing had touched it for at least 8 hours. I filled it the night before with a few ice cubes and some water and I went to bed leaving it on the counter. I woke up 8 hours later to it exploding. Most of it was still on the counter so it had not fallen and nothing was around it that could have fallen on it.

The product, in the report: IKEA Vardagen 15 oz clear drinking glass (Article 703.131.06)

IKEA Vardagen glass exploded while sitting on the kitchen counter. The glass had the remains of one ice cube and a metal straw. It had been filled with a cool drink. This happened previously to me with the smaller juice-sized version of this glass in 9/2021 and it was reported to IKEA directly. This is NOT a case of extreme temperature change nor mishandling. In fact, I am especially careful since my experience with the smaller sized version of the glass.

The product, in the report: Ikea tall and short matching drinking glasses. Number on the bottom of the tall glass is- 22943

New Ikea glasses with a water and electrolyte mixture are shattering untouched and on there own. The first glass had little to no liquid left in it and had been on a desk untouched for about 30 minutes and it shattered sending glass all over. This was witnessed by my husband and myself. A second glass today filled with the same contents did the same sending the liquid everywhere and large pieces of glass with it.

I poured cold water into my IKEA 365+ glass cup and it shattered without any contact with other hard surfaces (I was only holding it in my hand). It caused me to get a laceration on my leg requiring stitches.

The product, in the report: IKEA Drinking Glass Model POKAL Glass, turquoise12 oz $1.49 https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/pokal-glass-turquoise-40342898/

Last night, after I was done cooking dinner, I called my family to the dinner table. My son, 6, sat at the kitchen table, and I put his plate of food in front of him. We were still waiting for his dad, my husband, to come down, and I was still setting the table. I went to our kitchen cabinet to grab a drinking glass for my son. He uses the same IKEA drinking glass every night of which we had (past tense because I threw them out last night) about 6. I reached in the cabinet, and grabbed the glass as one does. Just as the glass and my hand cleared the front of the cabinet, but before I could put it down on the counter to fill it with water, the glass exploded. No, I do not mean that it broke, cracked, or shattered. It exploded like a bomb! Thank goodness my son was at the kitchen table and not trailing behind me as he often does, or that my husband had not just arrived to the kitchen. The glass exploded with such force that we found shards in the hallway to the dining room, at least 20 feet away. My arm was covered in fine glass, like sand, and I had several places on my hand that were bleeding (nothing serious), caused by glass shooting out with enormous force. Shards were in my hair, down my shirt, and in the nice dinner on the stove that I had just made. And glass even made it’s way over to the kitchen table where my son was sitting waiting for his glass of water. It honestly makes my heart stop to think of how much worse this situation could have been. My husband is a physicist. He tells me that the glass was defective and under enormous stress. I still don’t understand how this could have happened. Imagine if my son had been holding that glass! We have had these IKEA glasses for about 3 years (a guesstimate). I unload the dishwasher every AM, and this happened around 6 PM at night, so there was no change in temperature or other environmental factors. The glass did not hit the shelf on the way out. I had not even put it on the counter. All I did was pick it up and it exploded, like a bomb, in my hand. It was very frightening and I am so worried that this could happen to someone else, god forbid a child. It seemed a prudent idea to report it.

The product, in the report: It was an IKEA brand glass made in Bulgaria. Product number 21422. The product was purchased in December 2017.

Immediately upon grasping a drinking glass to remove it from a dishwasher (very little presure) the glass shattered. Lterally upon touching the glass it exploded into several hundred pieces landing in and outside the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: Basic drinking glass from IKEA.

One basic drinking glass from Ikea exploded on the table. It was used just 5 minutes ago, and it was filled with room temperature drinking water.

The water spilled down on table and chairs, and the glass just disintegrated into tousands of pieces all over the place. Nobody touched the glass while exploding.

Made Apr 10, 2014, sent to the company Apr 18, 2014, published by CPSC May 2, 2014

The product, in the report: IKEA MJOD Beer glass

Glass suddenly and unexpectedly broke in my hand while I was holding it. Shortly after filling the glass with ice and soda, the bottom of the glass detached and fell to the floor. My reflex reaction to the falling piece of glass was to try and catch it. In doing so, the glass sliced a large chunk of skin off my fingertip. The wound is sizeable, bled profusely, and will most likely leave a pretty noticeable scar since I was unable to recover the severed piece of flesh. Went to my family doctor the following day and was told that wound could not be stitched due to the amount that was missing.
