Great Value Disposable Plastic Cups, Clear, 9 oz, 100 Count (Walmart) I’ve been using these cups since December 2025, I normally throw them away quickly after use. However, today I left the cup on the kitchen counter and within an hour the lining of the plastic came of in large and small sheets. I fear I have been ingesting late amounts of plastic for several months. I’ve had unexplained illness since I’ve used this product, and I have had a trip to the hospital emergency room back in March 2026. They did not have a diagnosis, and I even had a heart monitor and visited a cardiologist without a diagnosis still. I’m still experiencing symptoms, but just discovered the product defect today. The plastic lining is clear, and not visible while liquid is in the cup.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Aug 14, 2016, sent to the company Aug 22, 2016, published by CPSC Sep 6, 2016
The product, in the report: Styrofoam Cup : Great Value Foam Cups 8.5 FL OZ
Product Name : Great Value Foam Cups Quantity : 51 Size 8.5 FL OZ (251.4mL) Along the side of the package is the code: 11 WD 07/20/16 08:41 AM Along the bottom of the package is the code: 8RP5WM
On Tuesday, August 9, 2016 I used a Great Value Brand 8.5 FL OZ Styrofoam cup to pour some coffee. When I poured the coffee into the cup, it collapsed and folded inward. The inward collapse of the cup in my hand caused the coffee to rush over the side of the cup, spilling abruptly onto my left hand and over my left wrist. The amount of hot coffee which overflowed was sufficient to run down both sides of my left wrist. The injuries sustained as a result were both 1st and second degree burns, followed by an infection within a matter of two to three days. I am now under the Doctors supervision for the burn and the complications / infection. The Doctor and Nurse could plainly see how the accident happened and the doctor advised me that the product is dangerous and that it would be a good idea for me to report it to your agency to prevent others from being injured. Now after having been injured, and looking closely at these cups, I have noticed that the strength, and even the amount of materials put into the product is far less than that of the two brands of cups I normally purchase and use on a regular basis. The density and the quantity / the mass of material is far less than the [REDACTED] or [REDACTED] brand of the same size and type. The weight of these cups is less and the structure is much weaker than the stronger, better quality [REDACTED] brand or [REDACTED] brand cups which I am accustomed to. Not only are they a lesser quality product, they are not suitable for the advertised purpose. 1. When the weight of the coffee reached about 2/3 full, the cup very abruptly collapsed and folded in my hand. 2. The heat of the liquid may have been a factor in the collapse since the cup is so weak that a temperature change could reduce the strength of the cup, which seemed to, by my observation, to have occurred. In other words, the heat may have played a factor in the collapse of the already inadequate materials used to produce the cup. 3. The cups are not adequate in density / thickness and can collapse while serving hot liquids.
If you will examine the Great Value 8.5 OZ cups and compare them to the other brands, and the standard they meet, it will be clear that the Great Value / Walmart brand should be removed from the shelves and the cup should be either discontinued all together, or at the very least, for the protection of the consumer, redesigned. A consumer who is used to the thick strong [REDACTED] cup, or the equally thick strong [REDACTED] cup, would likely expect the same quality from a Walmart / Great Value brand cup. Since the other two store brands would seem to have set the standard for generic / store brand quality, the consumer might be caught off guard by the very weak Great Value cup and more injuries such as mine will very likely occur over time to others who are not familiar with the flimsy, weak structure of the Great Value Cups! I often serve hot chocolate and tea to friends and family in the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] brand cups and I am relieved that I have learned this about the Great Value cups before injuring someone other than myself with such a not only poor quality, but dangerous and defective product. I will certainly not be using any of these in the future!
I request that these Great Value 8.5 OZ Foam cups be called to the attention of Walmart Corporation for voluntary recall. The company should redesign the cups, using better materials of greater integrity with sufficient density and strength to be used for hot liquids as advertised on the cup.
I request that the consumer product safety commission examine the cups listed below (or at least current stock from any Walmart Store) matching the product description, for examination and recall. Product Name : Great Value Foam Cups Quantity : 51 Size 8.5 FL OZ (251.4mL) Along the side of the package is the code: 11 WD 07/20/16 08:41 AM Along the bottom of the package is the code: 8RP5WM
