The product, in the report: The device is believed to be and Ember Mug 2 in Navy Blue with a laser etched knot logo engraved on the side. The exact model details are not available as the markings were consumed during the incident and the owner doesn’t have any of the original packaging.

The owner of an Ember brand electric heated mug had the device docked on its charging pad and a small amount of liquid in the cup. It was sitting next to her on her desk when it suddenly started smoking from the base of the mug. She quickly picked up the mug and carried it to a sink and dumped out the liquid and called for help. A coworker decided to take the mug outside and placed it on the concrete where it continued to smoke while they retreated. Approximately 30 seconds after placing it on the ground it went into thermal runaway and shot flames and high pressure smoke out until it melted the base off of the mug. They poured water on the device to extinguish the flames and let it cool for a while. Approximately 2 hours later they contacted the fire department at the request of their Safety Manager. The FD checked the device and where able to detach the batteries from the base. They noted that it had completely cooled and collected all of it in non flammable evidence cans and preserved for investigation. No injuries were reported at the time of the incident other than immediate short term respiratory distress from the smoke. Those involved were advised on the possible inhalation exposures they were subjected to and told to monitor themselves and seek medical attention if they notice any unusual symptoms after refusing medical care. The owner advised the investigator that it had only been used twice since receiving it as a gift for Christmas 2025. It hadn’t been dropped, submerged in water, or otherwise mistreated in any way that they could recall.

I accidentally put my Ember mug in the microwave and it exploded. It released toxic fumes in my apartment and destroyed the microwave. I am 61 years old and not in great shape and unintentionally breathed the fumes because they were released throughout my apartment.

The product, in the report: Rechargeable coffee mug

I have been using a rechargeable coffee mug (Ember) for a year now. Recently, after I finished a cup of coffee, I noticed the ceramic coating on the bottom inside of the mug was missing - I had just ingested it. The missing coating is in the shape of the heating element, so I believe this is why it eventually came off. The company (EMBER) has no customer service phone number and will only take online inquiries from customers who can prove they purchased the product directly from Ember. I received this mug as a birthday gift, so I was unable to prove my purchase and message them. I have no idea what this coating is made of and no idea if it is safe to ingest such a large amount of it at one time. I have sent a message to support@ember.com but have gotten no response.

The product, in the report: The product is a high end electronic coffee travel mug that uses rechargeable batteries and electronics to keep your coffee at the temperature you like. It will also link to your cell phone to give you updates about temperature and battery life. There is an LED display on the side that allows you to see the temperature of your coffee as well as battery life and the mug owner’s name.

I was using my Ember Travel Mug when I noticed that the push button lid was not working properly. I went to the company website to find out how to get a replacement. They were very helpful and sent one out free of charge immediately. When it arrived, I switched it out and was playing with the old one to see if I could figure out why it failed. While pushing the center of the lid trying to get it to stay open, a ½” long stainless steel pin fell out onto my kitchen counter. I immediately realized that this pin could have at any time fallen into my coffee and I could have accidently ingested it. This would have resulted in a serious, possibly fatal medical situation. Lucky for me it fell onto the counter.

The product, in the report: Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug, 14 oz, 1-hr Battery Life, Black - App Controlled Heated Coffee Mug Model 3A016JN00-600-G UPC 8 10011 40056 6

I mistakenly placed my Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug 2 in the microwave to warm up cold coffee. In less than a minute the bottom of the mug exploded and began burning with large flames and a very dense, acrid, black, fine-particled smoke. Opened microwave door and new oxygen caused flames to increase. Closed door and flames died down for lack of oxygen and then went out. Removed charged remains and set outdoors to continue smoldering and then go out. Opened all windows to remove dense smoke going throughout the house. In all of the materials received from purchase there was no mention of the extreme danger of placing the cup in the microwave--just one brief statement in small print, “Do not microwave.” My concern is that there was no mention of the extreme danger of placing the cup in the microwave and the explosion and flames that would result. Were such a statement of danger prominent in the written materials and also on the cup, I would have been adequately forewarned of the danger and not inadvertently placed the cup in the microwave. The microwave was also destroyed and is being replaced.
