The product, in the report: Duralex Le Picardie Tumbler set in a 24 piece assorted sizes of 3.25/8.75/12.5/17.5 oz glasses

My 7YO daughter was helping me empty the dishwasher that had been sitting (cooled) overnight. She lightly touched one of our 17oz Le Picardie/Duralex drinking glasses and it exploded with a very loud pop. Glass shot, with explosive force, all over the kitchen and into the next room. Fortunately all my daughter experienced was some mild trauma and a small cut on her right hand, between her fingers. No medical attention was required. I checked with my husband, our dishwasher had been run the night before, as it had been for the past 6 years we’ve owned/used/washed these glasses, on “normal” mode, regular dry cycle. We both thought it was a fluke until it happened again, this time untouched in a dirty dishwasher that hadn’t been run yet. I don’t have photos because, both times, I rushed to clean up shattered glass so no one was hurt further.

I was unloading the dishwasher and a Duralex glass tumbler got tapped lightly against the counter. I checked it for chips and cracks and, finding none, placed the tumbler on a shelf in the cupboard. Leaving the cupboard door open, I continued unloading the dishwasher. After a few seconds, the tumbler exploded, sending hundreds of pieces of glass flying around the kitchen and even into the next room. Fortunately no one was injured.

The product, in the report: Duralex Picardie Glassware purchased from William Sonoma in 2006. Both glasses that errupted were 16 oz scapacity. They look the same as the Duralex Picardie glasses currently sold at William Sonoma, just 15 years older.

Duralex Picardie Glassware. Purchased from William Sonoma in 2006. I’ve had 2 glasses spontaneously explode in the last two weeks. The first time, I was simply picking up the glass when it shattered. The second time was similar, except it was my son and he cut his hands on the glass (minor cut, nothing major). The glass went flying everywhere. I am so thankful it didn’t land in his eye. I read up on tempered glass and learned that manufacturing defects can cause exploding glass 10-20 years later. Mine are 15 years old. It seems odd that 2 would explode out of nowhere within the same timeframe. I’m concerned there was a manufacturing defect in my batch of glasses. The photo I attached shows the glass that shattered. It fell into the dishwasher. To be clear, there was no temperature change when the glass shattered. The glass was at room temp and just happened to shatter over the open dishwasher.

The product, in the report: The product is Duralex glassware made in France. This is the Picardie 12.5 oz clear tumbler glass. Model Picardie 12.5 oz UPC 844819010511

    Background

I have used Duralex glassware for years. In 2019-2020 when I moved into a new house, I added some larger sized glasses. I purchased 12.5 oz and 17oz tumblers from Crate & Barrel. I am a single, so the glasses do not get much use and they are all less than 2 years old, some just a year old.

    Incident

17-Feb-2021, while unloading the dishwasher at around 1pm, one of the 12.5 oz tumblers exploded as I touched it to remove it from the dishwasher. The dishwasher is a top-load drawer-type dishwasher. The force was enough to blow glass up (20 inches) from the dishwasher and send it onto the counter and floor 4-5 feet on either side of the dishwasher. There were 3 types of broken glass: squarish pieces 1-2cm in diameter, small shards, and a fine glass dust.

Fortunately, I got none of the larger pieces in my eyes, but I did get some of the glass dust in my eyes.

I called my ophthalmologist. The office advised me to flush my eyes and apply artificial tears today and to call them back the next day if the irritation persists. The irrigation is persistent and my right eye and I will go in for a checkup. It feels like I have some sand in my right eye.

I did a [REDACTED] search on “duralex exploding” and there is an [REDACTED] discussion of the topic as well as others sharing their experiences. I was shocked. I had no idea. I would not purchase a product that had the potential to explode upon touch. The product is said to be dishwasher safe, so there was no reason for it to explode as I unloaded the dishwasher.

I called Duralex. They said they could send me some information on exploding glass. The customer service agent volunteered she had Duralex Picardie glassware explode in her cupboard once. Other than that, I got stalling and a repeated offer to send me info on their glass.

I asked to talk to a manager, because this is a serious safety issue. I got voicemail of someone of a [REDACTED] I left a message but did not heard back.

Duralex offered to replace the piece. I said I was not interested in a replacement. I no longer wish to used my Duralex. In my view, it is clearly unsafe.

What troubles me and the reason for my complaint is that this is a known problem with Duralex glass. Duralex told me this is a problem in older glassware. They said glass is made of layers and it can break down over time. Nonsense! My glassware was no more than 2 or 2-1/2 years old, lightly used and well-taken care of.

I notified Crate & Barrel, where I purchased the glassware. Unlike Duralex, they were concerned and followed up immediately. They offered me a full refund. I said I want them to do more than that. I want them to do their own investigation of the glassware and the potential for explosion and after that if they continue to sell it to provide some kind of warning to consumers.

With regard to the product itself, I regard it as unsafe. I have sustained an injury that I will need treated. It could have been MUCH more serious.

  8. Emergency room

Made Nov 13, 2018, sent to the company Nov 20, 2018, published by CPSC Dec 6, 2018

The product, in the report: Very common kitchen drinking glasses. These are the taller 12oz version

We own Duralex Picardie tumblers (drink glasses) from Williams Sonoma, but twice now we’ve had problems with the tumblers ‘exploding’ with remarkable force and sound.

This weekend I knocked an empty one onto our kitchen counter (so it didn’t ‘fall’ other than its own height), and it exploded with a loud bang into 100+ pieces, almost none of them bigger than a half-dollar coin. It was shocking and took about 30 minutes to thoroughly clean up all the pieces. I was very glad that neither our children nor our dog were home at the time.

I’m attaching photos showing how much glass was produced from this ‘explosion’.

The first time this happened to me, several years ago, I thought it was just a fluke, but that time it sent me to the emergency room for a scratch on my eye from a flying shard of glass.

And I just [REDACTED] and found many other reports of people amazed at how one of these Picardie glasses had shattered for them.

    [REDACTED] Thank you

My daughter went to grab a drinking glass from the cabinet and it exploded in her hand when she touched it. She did not drop it; she merely touched it. Tiny shards of glass exploded throughout the cabinet, on the countertop, and on the floor. The glassware is marked Duralex made in France. She experienced some small cuts on her hand.

The product, in the report: Duralex Picardie 16 7/8 drinking glasses

Duralex Picardie 16 7/8 oz drinking glass exploded inside dishwasher while I was trying to unload. Didn’t think anything of it at the time. Just thought somehow the heat of the dishwasher did something that led to the explosion.

A month or two later, another drinking glass exploded in my hand while I was clearing away dishes from our dining room table. Chards of glass went on me, on the table and other dishes/bowls, on the floor, flew out of the room into my adjoining living room. I got small cuts while trying to clean off the glass. No heat/temperature change was present this time.

The product, in the report: Duralex Picardie glass tumbler, 12 oz size

A Duralex Picardie glass tumbler exploded in my hand as I was loading it into the dishwasher. Glass pieces/shards were scattered in every direction, some landing as far as 4 feet away from the site of the explosion. I had done nothing to mistreat this glass; it exploded as I gently touched it against the top rack of the dishwasher while loading it.

A [REDACTED] search of “duralex exploding” revealed a great many similar reports.

I reported this to Duralex-USA but received no response other than their assertion that these glasses were safe. Clearly this is not the case.
