The product, in the report: Whittier 24 Piece Stoneware Dinnerware Set - Service for 6
I purchased new dinnerware in April from Wayfair. We kept noticing small black dots on the back of the plates but couldn’t understand what was wrong. I would also notice they felt wet, even days after putting them in the cabinet. Our dishwasher thoroughly dries our dishes, so this was quite confusing. We typically use only the top portion of the stack on a regular basis, but recently looked at those toward the bottom to discover they are covered in black mold. I was able to deduce that the stoneware material they are made from isn’t properly sealed. They soak up water from the dishwasher (and they are labeled as dishwasher safe), which stays in the dishes for a very, very long time, leading to the slow growth of black mold. We have been eating on contaminated dishes! I reported this to Wayfair, and despite their initial rejection managed to get a refund. I looked further into the problem to discover that many other purchasers have experienced the same issue, yet these dishes are still being sold. I contacted the manufacturer, whose name is stamped on the bottom, and they will not respond. I hope I discovered this issue before my family developed a medical issue, but think this product needs to be pulled from the market!
