  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Oct 7, 2026, sent to the company Oct 13, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 27, 2026

The product, in the report: Kamenstein Set of 2, Electric Gravity Feed Grinders, prefilled with 3.5 oz sea salt 100g in the salt grinder unit, 1.7 oz peppercorns 50g in the pepper grinder unit, package Model Number 5347829, 8 supplied [REDACTED] AAA batteries

I purchased a two unit kit, battery powered Pepper and Salt Grinder units. Each unit requires 4-AAA batteries. I opened the package, purchased at Sams Club, Forest Drive store, Columbia SC, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, on arriving home, inserted the supplied [REDACTED] AAA batteries to use the product. The units operate when turned upside down automatically with no manual on/off device. When I turned the salt grinder upside down it made a momentary sound of activating then nothing. I set it down on its base, which should have turned it off, and moved to try the pepper grinder unit. On turning the pepper grinder unit upside down the grinder mechanism activated but sounded weak, so, I thought maybe the supplied batteries were weak or outdated since I could not find a date on the batteries. I have [REDACTED] AAA batteries purchased and in supply, so, I got 4 of my own AAA batteries to try the salt grinder, replacing all 4 supplied [REDACTED] batteries with 4 [REDACTED] batteries and tried to operate the salt grinder. I turned it upside down, shaking the salt that was already stoked by the company in the grinder. The salt grinder made no sound of operation. At this point, maybe 2 or 3 minutes, I went to remove my 4 [REDACTED] batteries from the grinder so I could return it to Sams Club for a replacement. As I went to remove the batteries, the first battery was so hot it burned the tip of my finger showing what appears to be a dead short of some type. I used a fork prong to get the batter out of the grinder and took the too hot to handle battery to my brick steps outside my house to let it cool before discarding. This device was hot enough, a fire of some type would most assuredly occurred had it been left unattended for a period of time.
