The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Swanton Stripe Break-Resistant Opal Glass Dinnerware. I have only had a problem with the bowls, the plates are fine so far.

My opal glass bowls from Gibson Ultra randomly shatter under no-stress conditions. They are advertised as shatter resistant, and microwave and dishwasher safe, but I have had 3 bowls (out of 8 I purchased a few months ago) shatter randomly. One was sitting on a desk undisturbed about 4 hours after being microwaved with food inside. Another was overnight inside the dishwasher, which had run overnight. I don’t know when exactly it shattered. The third shattered inside the dishwasher that had not been run yet. When I say “shatter” I mean that there are LOTS of large pieces, along with Lots of small shards smaller than a finger nail clipping--and sharp.

The product, in the report: dishes

The consumer has a safety concern in reference to the dishes. They are marked dishwasher and microwave safe but the consumer stated that they get too hot to the touch when used in the microwave. They are also unsafe.

On 3/1, the consumer placed a bag of vegetables on one of the salad plates and put the plate in the microwave. The cook time was set for 5 minutes. After approximately 3 to 4 minutes, the consumer heard a bang. The consumer checked the microwave and discovered that the plate had shattered.

The consumer contacted the firm and was advised that she should have looked for hairline cracks. No one was injured.

The product, in the report: Gibson elite Lanark dinnerware coffee mug

I put one of my Gibson elite dinnerware coffee cups in my microwave to make a cup of tea. Placed on heat for one minute, when I grabbed a hold of the cup’s handle it burned my finger causing me to drop the cup of hot water. These dishes are clearly marked dishwasher and microwave safe.

The product, in the report: GIBSON KA1 11 ReacTV DINNERWARE SET DISHWASHER/MICROWAVE SAFE

Dear Sir/Ms. In July of this year I bought a set of dinnerware from a Payless Grocery in Anderson Indiana. A few days ago I put one of these dishes in my microwave and upon hearing the bell opened the door, reached in and the dish literally exploded. Fortunately I incurred no injury but think of the possibilities. My granddaughter stays with me often and if indeed she had been injured in a similar event with loss of eye or anything for that matter ..... major suit would have been initiated. I returned the dishes to the store including the one which exploded. Having no foreseeable need to keep the receipt for dishes I didn’t; however, I did take with me the credit card statement showing the purchase, date, etc.. The manager said no receipt/no refund. I mentioned the safety issue but she paid absolutely no attention to safety .. none. Since that time I have called a corporate phone number and had them send a receipt to me via e-mail. Upon several conversations with three store managers I have taken care of the refund myself. Now, I am sending this note to you concerning the all-important subject of a dangerous product. It is evidently mislabeled, ( says is microwavable safe on dish) defective, and has injurious probability. In fairness to you I write you first that you may look into this matter thus avoiding further action by me. Retraction of product from all store shelves requested.

I experienced a safety issue with a GibsonUSA coffee mug I recently received as a Christmas gift.

The problem is that the mug handle becomes dangerously hot when heating liquid in a microwave oven. When a person reaches into the microwave to pull the mug out by the handle, the handle is nearly as hot as the boiling liquid itself. Fortunately, when I reflexively pulled my hand away from the mug the first time, I did not knock over the entire mug - spilling boiling water on myself. But another person might not be so lucky.

The label on the bottom of the mug reads as follows: The bottom label reads as follows: Gibson Homes Mug Stoneware Dishwasher and Microwave safe Item 68655.01 - Inspirational words UPC 085081918352 Distributed by Gibson Overseas Inc Commerce, CA 90040 Gibsonusa.com Made in China
