The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

Made Apr 11, 2017, sent to the company Apr 19, 2017, published by CPSC May 3, 2017

The product, in the report: 18 oz Thermal Mug with screw on top and flip open port.

Bubba Brands Bubba. 18oz Thermal Mug Model HR-1. Screw on cap has very soft silicone plastic o’ring seal. When tightening the o’ring stretches and buckles out producing a 1/8” to 1/4” gap in the seal. When the mug is tipped with a hop liquid the agitation causes and increase in the vapor pressure inside the mug. The 160 degree hot coffee in my case was then spewed upward onto my nose and glasses. Had I not been wearing glasses I would have sustained severe eye injury. Subsequent operations of the cap showed that the malfunction was frequent and occurred at random positions around the cap making the leak unpredictable.

I started closing the service port and holding the cup on its side over the sink each time I filled it to determine if it had sealed. As soon as I could I acquired a suitably sized butyl o’ring that seals every time without leaking.

I contacted Bubba to tell them about the hazard and their response was “You have voided your lifetime warranty by installing unapproved parts.” Thank you, Bubba. It’s so nice to know you care.

Mug was purchased at a Walmart in [REDACTED].
