The product, in the report: Pampered Chef salt grinder set with bamboo top, model number 2198
We have owned the Pamper Chef bamboo top salt shaker/grinder (item model number 2198) for several years. Recently we noticed a coiled piece metal in our food, but didn’t know where the metal came from. The second time we found metal was immediately after using the grinder. The spring located just above the grinder turned out to have deteriorated and was falling internally into the grinder, which was the source of the metal. Luckily we caught the metal on both instances and stopped using our grinder, but this faulty design is extremely dangerous and could cause great harm if the rusty spring metal were swallowed.
Of special note, the bamboo grinders have been discontinued and a more modern version has replaced them, but with the same design flaw where the spring is in direct contact with the rock salt just above the grinder. The company even sells replacement springs as a kit without any consumer safety information or warnings that the springs may fail.
We did contact Pampered Chef about the defective and dangerous design. They forwarded the issue onto the Field Services Risk Management department. They also replaced the grinders with identical product that still contains the spring in contact with the salt.
