The product, in the report: Jura Capresso Coffee Grinder - Model 505

This morning I plugged in my Capresso coffee grinder - the outlet is known to be good/property wired. WITHOUT the coffee grinder button being depressed, the grinder sparked and let out a loud pop immediately after being plugged in. It left a dark ring on my butcher block counter, which wipe away with some determination.

The product, in the report: Capresso coffee grinder Model 503

Last week, a huge “fire ball” - 3 to 4 inches large shot our of the electrical outlet while I had 2 appliances plugged in: my coffee maker and my Capresso coffee grinder. I switched outlets and continued making and grinding coffee. I taped over the outlet from which the fireball came.

Two days later, I again had both appliances plugged in to another outlet. The coffee maker was running. The grinder was not running, but it was plugged in. A huge spark came out of the outlet and hit my jacket. At that point, I pulled everything out of the outlet and we turned off the breakers.

I called the Scarsdale Fire Dept. The Fire Dept examined the outlets and breakers and saw nothing unusual. They questioned whether an applicance may have been at fault.

When the electrician came, he too examined the outlets and wiring. He said everything was normal. He thought there may have been an unusual power surge. When he proceeded to test the 2 applicances: the coffee maker and the coffee grinder, the grinder did not work in one outlet. He looked at the grinder and thought the plug may have been faulty. At that point he saw that, at the point wheree the cord connects to the grinder, the rubber had worn away and the wiring was completely exposed.

The cord is intended to be wrapped into a groove at the base of the grinder and evidently, little by little the rubber wore away exposing the wires. I think the grinder is about 2-3 years old. The electrician said that there should have been a piece of protective rubber at the point where the cord meets the unit

The Grinder is Capresso Model 503. I emailed Capressor yesterday and have not received a response yet. As I could have been seriously burned, or this could have started a fire, I am alerting you.
