  1. Emergency room

Made May 8, 2014, sent to the company May 15, 2014, published by CPSC May 30, 2014

The product, in the report: Product Details Product Description: Gourmet Club Apple Wedger. Used to core and slice apples. Black. 8 metallic blades set into a circular black hard plastic setting. Product states: “Cuts and decores an apple with one cut.” Product Category Kitchen

While using a Gourmet Club Apple Wedger to prepare apples for lunch, the center blade became detached from the housing unit, severely cutting my right thumb and requiring an emergency room visit and stitches. This was the second time I experienced this product having a defect where the blade detaches. However, the first time it occurred I was not injured and felt that it would be okay to purchase another one.

The product, in the report: Gourmet Club Apple Wedger. Used to core and slice apples. Black. 8 metallic blades set into a circular black hard plastic setting. Product states: “Cuts and decores an apple with one cut.”

[REDACTED], my spouse, was slicing an apple to add to our salads for lunch. We had purchased the product: Gourmet Club Apple Wedger from Walmart less than 2 months ago and have only used it 5-6 times. While [REDACTED]] was pressing down on the apple slicer as directed, the blades separated from the plastic holder and got stuck in the apple, slicing into his hand. If he did not respond as quickly and had pressed down even a fraction of a second longer, he would have needed stitches instead of just disinfectant and bandages! Trying to locate and get a hold of the company Best Brands Consumer Products, INC. is difficult, and I have in the process found many more stories similar to what happened in our home. This product is dangerous and should be recalled!

I bought the apple corer/slicer this week at Walmart. I used it a couple of times without incident. Around the third time using it, I placed the corer on top of my apple and proceeded to push it down to slice it. Not even half way down the apple the metal center of the slicer bent and came apart from the plastic handles. The plastic handles slammed to the counter and the metal (still in the apple) sliced into the fleshy part of my thumbs on both hands.

The product, in the report: “Cuts and decores an apple with one cut. Hand wash only” ...is what it says on the product package and it shows an apple being perfectly sliced, which is false advertisement on top of the product being unsafe.

I was slicing apples with the Gourmet Club Apple Wedger from Walmart in Corona and barely started slicing the first apple and the product broke in my hand and sliced my finger bad. It took over a half an hour to control the bleeding. After researching more information about this product, come to find out many other people have experienced the same incident with this product. This product is going to chop someone’s finger off by using it what it’s designed for. It needs to be pulled off the shelves immediately and the public needs to be warned not to use it before someone has a life-altering accident (amputation of a finger).
