The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

Made Feb 10, 2018, sent to the company Feb 20, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 6, 2018

The product, in the report: Calphalon® Contemporary Self-Sharpening 18-Piece Cutlery Set with SharpIN™ Technology purchased from Bed Bath and Beyond: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/calphalon-reg-contemporary-self-sharpening-18-piece-cutlery-set-with-sharpin-technology/1044109257

I purchased the Calphalon Contemporary Self-Sharpening 18-Piece Cutlery Set with SharpIN Technology. It has a date code of 0860916.

From that set, my wife was using the 8 inch slicer to cut carrots and the blade snapped off close to the handle. Her hand was scratched, but not seriously in the incident.

Calphalon says that the 0860916 set is not part of the current recall, but obviously that code is defective as well.

The product, in the report: Calphalon Precision Mandoline Slicer

On July 12, I used the Calphalon Mandoline Precision Slicer for the first time. It amputated the fingertip of my middle finger on my right hand, and I had to be rushed to the emergency room, where they stitched it back on. As a result of my injury, I may have permanent loss of sensation in my fingertip.

This particular mandoline slicer lacks proper warning labels and specific instructions. The only label on the device when a customer opens it is deceiving. The label that tells the user how to disable the safety guard on the blade -- a setting not recommended by the for most users. First-time users are left with the impression that they must disable that safety feature to be able to use the device. There is no warning label that the blade is *extremely* sharp, or that the user should never use the item without the safety gripper / hand guard.

The design of the flexible food gripper is also unsafe. The material used is flexible and does not afford users the stability needed to slice food safely. In the instructions, Calphalon indicates that items larger than the gripper can be sliced by removing the cap of the gripping mechanism, which undermines its integrity, renders it unstable and forces the food object to bind against the blade. As a result, it does not work properly, leading users to try to use the device without the safety gripper, significantly increasing the risk of injury. **This is the only mandoline slicer on the market with this design. ALL other mandoline slicers have a firm, solid plastic handle for users to hold onto, and most have a mechanical plunger that moves the food closer to the blade. This design forces the user to manually compress the food item with their hand, moving hands and fingers closer to the blade. The flexible nature of the food gripper makes it unstable, and the gripper does not fit securely on the cutting plane.**

Many customer online reviews indicate that they cut themselves using the device and that the blade did not cut properly -- that it shredded their food and their fingers.

A [REDACTED].com video promoting the item also shows an advertising representative holding the safety gripper improperly.
