How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 2 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Oct 28, 2012, sent to the company Nov 7, 2012, published by CPSC Nov 23, 2012

The product, in the report: Mastrad A64601 Top Chips Maker and Slicer Set One top chips maker tray and slicer set by mastrad Made of premium silicone, crisp vegetables and fruits crisp up without use of fats or oils Interlocking trays allow the use of multiple trays at once to cook more than one serving at a time A healthier alternative to store-bought chips and crisps Dishwasher safe

I used my Mastrad TopChips Maker a few times and really loved it, but then all of a sudden my husband saw a spark and I turned around to see a fire filling my microwave. Also, after using the chip maker a few times in a row my microwave plate started making noises and it turns out that it was very hot. I feel that this product is unsafe if not watched continuously while in use, and also may cause damage to a microwave.

You will not only make delicious potato chips, the chips maker also works great with other root vegetables such as carrots, beets and parsnips and also with fruits: apples, pears, mangoes… Available now at www.topchips.com ! • 1 set of 2 stackable trays, make twice as many chips at once • 1 tray and a mini-mandoline, for ideally thick, even slices every time • Silicone non-stick tray • Microwave cooking only • Dishwasher safe • Cooking instructions included

Mastrad A64601 Top Chips Maker and Slicer Set We received the microwave chip maker as a holiday gift. New Year’s Eve we tried twice to make sweet potato chips unsuccessfully - the first time 3 minutes cook time recommended by the manufacturer and they were undercooked around the edges. The second try for four minutes and the center was overcooked. Third try with the microwave set at 3:30, I started the microwave and stepped out to the patio to check on my barbecue. Less than two minutes later I returned to find a smoke filled kitchen and a fire in the microwave (with 46 seconds cook time still remaining). Opening the microwave door I found chip maker surface on fire (as in flames) necessitating carrying the burning chip tray across the kitchen and dropping into the kitchen sink using water to extinguish it. There was a 3 x 3 hole burned in it. Thankfully we were able to get the smoke out of the house using a large fan and the microwave was not damaged by the fire. I submitted the incident through the Mastrad customer service website and received no response. This product should be recalled as unsafe for use in American households.
