  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 29, 2018, sent to the company Sep 6, 2018, published by CPSC Sep 20, 2018

The product, in the report: Hampton Forge 8IN/20.3CM CHEF - KOBE 15-118G-7H-10 Superior Steel-NO Stain

The Hampton Forge 8 inch chef’s knife broke while cutting vegetables. Fortunately there was no injury. We twice contacted the Company to ask about the warranty and received no answer. The design and/or manufacture of the knife seems to make it prone to breaking, a fact that is not obvious until the blade brakes away from the handle.

I purchased the Hampton Forge 17 pc Cutlery Set from Target.com on December 5th, 2016 and began using the set around January 1st, 2017. I was nearly injured by this set slicing a piece of cheese with the utility knife, when handle snapped and broke near the area where the knife attaches to the handle.

These knifes are of poor quality and are dangerous to others. Below is the information from Target.com.

Product: Hampton Forge knife (Epicure 10-130K-7T-8) Superior Steel - NO Stain. Purchase Date: January 2012 (10 months). Incident: When cutting a pie and applying moderate pressure, the blade of the knife has snapped off the handle reversing in the air and flying up with incredible force and speed towards my eye. It missed my eye by a millimeter. I am not a very strong woman, and I was cutting a pumpkin pie, not a brick - this is how I knew that this is a very dangerous product, and other people should be warned.

The product, in the report: Hampton Forge Epicure 17-piece Cutlery Set model number: HMC01B110G

I purchased Hampton Forge Epicure 17-piece cutlery set during the summer. In the last three months, three of the steak knives have broken. In one case, I was slicing some cheddar cheese, and the knife broke, and the blade tip punctured the skin on my left hand. Luckily, no significant injury, but if I had been working on a food item harder than cheese (!), there would have been more force involved.

The issue is that the tang of the knife blade extends only a very short distance into the handle -- a design issue that is not apparent until one of the knives breaks, at which point you can see the very short length of the tang. The hard plastic is not of sufficient strength to handle the stress of transferring the force from the handle to the tang of the blade.

I still have two of the broken knives -- I threw the first one away, not realizing this would be a common occurrence. I can send a picture if that would be helpful.

By the way, if one does a [REDACTED] search on “hampton forge epicure knife broke” you will see that this is a _very_ common occurrence. I am glad that Hampton Forge appears very willing to provide a replacement set if contacted, but that does not solve the safety issue.
