The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Gerber Cohort knife

On October 15, 2016, I was using my Gerber Cohort knife which is subject to the recall – product number 8970614F.  The knife was in my left hand and I was pushing with my right hand on the back of the knife when the knife came unlocked, closing on my left index finger.  I was cut down to the bone and cartilage and required emergency care, stitches and surgery to repair my tendon.  I have suffered tendon and nerve damage.

The product, in the report: Folding Knife

This is the same knife as in Recall number: 12-163. I believe that the company may have redesigned the knife due to the previous recall and subsequently have actually made it as equally dangerous.

It is impossible to open with one hand as advertised. Once the initial resistance is overcome while opening it, it opens extremely rapidly with great force. I had one knife that I sent back to have the clip replaced and noted this issue as well. I was informed that the clip had been redesigned and that the opening mechanism had also been redesigned. I received a replacement knife and was unable to open it with one hand. While using both hands to open it, the knife opened so rapidly that it popped out of my hand and somehow lacerated my right index finger resulting in the need for two stitches. There are numerous reports of issues with this knife in the reviews on the Gerber Website. My initial review is dated 8/31/16. I have copied a link to the knife below.

The product, in the report: Machete

January 12th, 2013, caller opened package received and cut his thumb while pulling his Gerber Machete out of the packaging used when packing it to send to him.

He has had surgery, cannot bend his thumb and can only move it up and down. Two arteries where cut during this accident, both tendons were cut and all the nerves were cut. He has been advised that the nerves may grow back within the next two years.

The caller traveled to the Denton Regional hospital by driving himself after wrapping his thumb very tightly. He then spent two months in D&D Rehabitional Center in Denton, TX. He was released after four hours of surgery with pain medicine and antibiotic.

He has not contacted the manufacturer yet but does intend to contact them.
