The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

Made Apr 17, 2018, sent to the company Apr 25, 2018, published by CPSC May 16, 2018

The product, in the report: Bear Grylls Machete and Black Sheath with only stitching holding it together on the one side.

I was holding the Bear Grylls machete with two hands, my right hand on the handle and my left on the sheath, I went to pull the machete out of its sheath and the blade cut through the sheath and into my hand. The incident does not require stitches but it is definitely painful and not the type of experience I have come to expect from your products. I have Ben researching why this happened and found out that there has been a recall on this particular sheath meaning this has happened before. I still love this machete but would like to see something done because this kind of sucks that I had to find out about the recall after cutting my hand. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon. Also I just found out that there was also a recall on the handle which was prone to breaking and even though that is not the reason I am making this report today, the handle broke in my hand as I was using it prior to this incident so I figured I would mention that as well.

The product, in the report: Name of Product: Bear Grylls Parang Model #: 31-002289N Date stamp on blade: 46608812a NOTE: the sheath in the package had safety brads only on one side. After contacting the company, they sent a replacement shaft with brads all round. Which is how it should have been designed and sold in the first place.

My husband nearly severed his thumb on Bear Grylls Parang machete (parang) Model#: 31-002289N. He had just opened the package and was sliding the machete into the shaft. Unfortunately he put it in upside down (it has a curved blade) and the knife sliced through the treads of the shaft and severely cut his thumb. The cut was deep enough that it severed one of the nerves in his thumb. THIS IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN THE SHAFT! After contacting Gerber/Fiscar they sent me a replacement shaft that had safety brads all round instead of just the one side on the original. Surgery and ER treatment resulted in over $14,000 in medical bills. After referring me to their insurance (liberty Mutual} I received a $10,000 settlement.
