How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 3 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Oct 6, 2014, sent to the company Nov 20, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 12, 2014

The product, in the report: Memorial Candle

On the evening of 10/03/14 I lit a memorial candle: Yehuda Yahrtzeit Memorial Candle. These candles are supposed to burn for 24 hours. The following evening the candle was still burning when I went to sleep. I have followed this routine for many years without incident. The next morning I went to look at the candle and discovered that the small metal tab that anchors the wick was on the floor! The marble surface of the table was splattered with wax. Fortunately the glass holder was standing in a marble tray on the table and there was no sign of any burn on the wood floor in front of the table. The glass was not cracked. Apparently when the flame went out something “imploded” and propelled the metal tab and wick out of the glass and onto the floor.

No one was injured .......THIS TIME and there was no fire,

The product, in the report: Yahrzeit Memorial Candle

On 1/23/13 we lit a 24 hour memorial candle called a “Yahrzeit Memorial Candle” which was manufactured by a company called “Yehuda”. The other package labeling said “Distributed by HKS Marketing Ltd, Bayonne, NJ 07002 USA, Product of Israel”

The product is a small glass jar filled with paraffin. The wick in the center is attached to a small metal button located near the center (but not anchored there). We have burnt many such candles in the past without incident, but we found upon wakening (it is designed to burn 24 hours) that the candle was out and the metal button and wick had slipped to the side of the jar which was cracked and a pool of now solidified paraffin was outside the jar. Fortunately,we burn these in a shallow pan upon a glass cooktop surface. But if these precautions were not taken it is reasonable to expect that force of the glass shattering while the candle was buring might lead to a house fire.
