  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 8, 2024, sent to the company Jan 23, 2024, published by CPSC Feb 6, 2024

The product, in the report: There are many shops on Etsy that sell wooden bowl candles. I reported the product to Etsy as well as the seller I purchased from. Etsy makes it difficult to reach them, so I had to submit it as “violating Etsy policies.” It seems they have pulled that particular product while it’s under review, but she has many other wooden bowl candles that are STILL for sale, not to mention the other shops on Etsy who are also still selling wooden bowl candles. I did not feel the seller was going to do anything on her own. As evidence, after I messaged her and sent photos, she did not pull her candles and continues to sell them.

I want to make you aware of candles in wooden bowls on Etsy catching fire. I’m sure that a small seller is not big enough for you to take action, but I’m hoping you can take action on all of these products as a whole on Etsy. There are multiple shops selling them. I bought a wooden bowl candle for a friend and it caught on fire, and her home nearly caught on fire as well. I went back to the reviews of the seller and found others describing the same situation. I’m not sure about other sellers, but the seller I purchased from believes that having a Disclaimer somehow makes it okay to sell an unsafe product. I have photos of the damaged product and charred wall and can give you the name of the shop if that would be helpful as well.

UPDATED ON 1/8/2024: [I want to add some information that I just found out. I reached out to another seller of wooden bowl candles on Etsy and she treats the wooden bowls with a plant-based flame retardant. I let the seller I purchased a candle from know, hopefully she takes action. It seems that some sellers treat the wooden bowls and others do not. I know this makes it more difficult to know which ones are safe and which ones aren’t, but perhaps consumers will now know to ask if the wood is treated before purchasing.]
