The product, in the report: 14.5 oz. glass jar candle.

My aunt lit a jar candle on her dresser. (With absolutely nothing near or touching it) About 20 minutes later the smoke alarm outside the bedroom door went off. I thought it was a false alarm, so she turned it off and glanced in the bedroom doorway as she went by only to see a flames reflection on the bedspread. When she looked a flame about 1 foot was shooting out of the jar candle. There was so much smoke the curtains had already turned black where they laid on the cold air return. Had my smoke alarm not gone off, the room was moments of catching fire. She wet down a towel and placed it over the candle. The jar then broke, but the flame was distinguished. Close Call.

The product, in the report: Sold at Bath and Body Works. Manufactured by Slatkin & Co. Net wt. 1.6 oz/45 grams. UPC 0667528728627.

I bought a mini candle from Bath and Body Works. The container has small plastic footers on it and there is no warning or instruction to place in a separate container to burn. The container melted, burned through the bottom, and burned a hole in the table I set it on. Wax spilled out of the bottom. The room was filled with an acrid melted plastic smell which is how I was alerted to the fire hazard. I took pictures and have notified Bath and Body Works customer service.

The product, in the report: Scented Candle 1.6oz/45g

On June 9, 2011 I bought this candle from Bath & Body Works. I bought it home and put it on my wooden dining room table on a large cork coaster that I put all candles I burn on. I work at this table in the evenings and burn candles almost year round at this location. The candle was sitting right next to me about a foor away. This is a small 1.6 oz candle in a plastic cylinder container.

When the candle had burned down a little more than halfway, I noticed that the plastic cylinder container had begun to melt and started to become disfigured. I carried into my kitchen on the cork coaster and doused it with water to extinguish it.

I made a couple of copies on a copier to try and show you the beginnings of the melt down. In the one picture that shows the label of the candle tou will start to see the degredation on the right-hand side. I also copied the bottom of the candle in question to give you further product information. Please remember that this began when I was seated right next to the candle so the degradation of the container is not that severe though it is evident more in the actual product than in the enclosed photo copy.

There was no injury involved with the beginnings of the melt down with this product in my experience. I attribute this to the fact that the candle was sitting so close to me. I don’t think the average consumer sits this close to a burning candle prodcut for a period of time and therefore may miss seeing the potential for the melt down of this product which could be a potential fire hazard.

The moment after I doused the cande I called customer service line for Bath & Body Works. I expressed my safety concern about this product. the woman that took the call over the phone said she would have someone else from customer service call me back. I never did get that call back but I received a generic email several days later. I don’t think Bath & Body Works expressed a level of concern with regard to their product that is a potential fire hazard.

It is my opinion that this candle product has the potential to melt down and start a fire.I am certain that the CPSC will investigate this safety concern. I have the product in question with me and two others of the same candles I purchased at the same time (have never been lit) if the CPSC wishes to see the product or investigate further.

    Thank you for your concern.
