The product, in the report: Manischewitz “Shabbat candles,” box of 12
As they do every week, my elderly parents had lit two Manischeweitz candles as part of their celebration for the Jewish sabbath. We always place the candles on a trivet and, this week, the trivet was (fortunately) set on the dining table. The candles began to burn normally then, suddenly, the wax on one side of one candle melted all the way down and the entire area of wick that was exposed shot up in flames. We were very lucky that, despite the large flame, my father was able to blow it out. Sooty wax pooled on the tablecloth but luckily it did not ignite.
We had used four candles from the box of twelve before we used these two and those were fine. We later experienced a similar, but much smaller, melt down with one of the other candles in the box.
Although I contacted Manischeweitz and sent photos and offered to send the candle, they were interested only in offering me compensation for the damaged tablecloth and napkin and, despite my repeated inquiries, my initial contact would not answer any questions as to why this might have happened or the safety of using their product in the future. Once I told them that I would go to social media with the incident, a vice president wrote to me. Although I found an incident that was reported in 2012 in your database, the vice president claimed that they had none in their files. By then (our correspondence dragged out for two months) I realized that they simply wanted to pay me so that I could sue them, which was never my intent, and I not did not reply. I am aware that far more incidents happen than are reported and so I feel it is my obligation to let others know of this possibility. I will attempt to copy all correspondence into a file for your records.
Please note that I was not present for the actual incident, but my first saved correspondence is from October 7, 2015 and I am therefore reasonably certain that this happened on October 2, 2015.
Thank you for your work to keep consumers safe!

The product, in the report: Candle
The caller stated that the candle after being lit, it burns to one side and not the middle. The wick is exposed which illuminates like a burning fire instead of a candle burning. If this candle is not being monitored when in use can cause a fire. This incident had occured 3 times. There had been no injury associated with this incident.
7/16/12 The caller contacted the manufacturer and left a voicemail.
The caller feels that these candles are a fire hazard and should be taken off the market.
