  1. No one hurt

Made Dec 29, 2016, sent to the company Jan 18, 2017, published by CPSC Feb 2, 2017

The product, in the report: Habersham Candle Co. 4” Luminary candle “White Sand & Sea Salt” decorations. Model #FGBOT-0238 (according to Amazon.com, no longer have box). See https://www.amazon.com/Habersham-Candle-Company-Luminary-White/dp/B010W9RJTS.

Habersham Candle Co. “White Sand & Sea Salt” luminary candle tried to burn down my home. We no longer have the box, but Amazon.com lists it as model #FGBOT-0238. Between the inner wax (with the wick), and the outer wax (with decorations), is hard plastic shaped similar to a soup can. I assume there is some manufacturing advantage to forming the candle inside the hard plastic “soup can”, and then adding decorations in wax around it. The problem is that the hard plastic “soup can” is flammable. The candle starts out being just short of 4” tall. Everything was fine until it had burned down to about a 1” thickness of wax below the wick. The candle was used exclusively indoors, in a bathroom; without open windows or other sources of a draft. We never added any oil, or wood, or anything to increase the burn rate. The wick was kept trimmed. Still, the flame from the wick managed to ignite the hard plastic “soup can”, which converted the candle into a torch.

Before my wife could react, the more intense flame did damage to a wall, the underside of a shelf about 3 feet above the candle, to items near where the candle was sitting (flat surface), and it filled our house with smoke. To the best of my knowledge, there was no prior damage to our candle, or anything unusual about it. We also have a sister candle, in the green “sage” version. It appears just the same, except for a green wax color and flower shaped decorations.

My wife has burned an awful lot of candles, and this is the first one to ever start a fire. Hopefully, the manufacturer can replace that hard plastic “soup can” with glass, or a plastic which can’t burn, or some other alternative. Until an updated version is released, I’d worry about anyone using one of these candles anywhere near anything which could be damaged by flame or smoke. Amazon.com lists many different versions, with different wax colors, and different decorations, but likely the same danger.
