  1. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Nov 2, 2011, sent to the company Nov 22, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 7, 2011

The product, in the report: “Candle of Doom” sold for pumpkins and advertised as being able to cause smoke to come out of the pumpkin as it burns. Looks like a large tea-light in a aluminum cup

This is a copy of the letter I am planning to send to Kama, Inc., maker of the “Candle of Doom.” This candle caused a flash fire which burned my 3 and 2 year old sons-causing my 2 year old son 2nd degree burns on his lips. Below are all the details-

KAMA INC 3831 FENWAY XING MARIETTA, GA 30062-6923 (770) 578-1754

    Dear Kama, Inc.,

In October 2011 I purchased one of your “Candle of Doom” candles for our Halloween pumpkin. The candle did not work as advertised-no smoke came out of the jack o lantern. That issue seems trivial compared to the reason I am writing.

At the end of our Trick or Treating, my 3 and 2 year old sons and I were coming in for the night and realized we did not yet extinguish the candle in the pumpkin. I gave them each a small cup of water to throw in the pumpkin to put the candle out. What happened next shocked and terrified us. A ball of flames erupted out of the pumpkin. Both of my boys’ hair, eyebrows and eyelashes were singed. My 2 year old’s face was closest to the fire-about a foot away from the pumpkin. He sustained second degree burns on his lips.

Your candle did not warn to NOT extinguish it with water. It did warn against not letting pets or children play with the fire, however, most adults I have told about the situation told me they would have put the candle out in a similar manner. The children were not playing with fire but putting it out in what we thought was a safe manner. Obviously had I known there was any remote chance of my children being burned by your product, not only would I not have let them extinguish it but I would not have purchased it in the first place.

Your product should be taken off the market because of the burn risk it presents. I took my son to the doctor the following day. The doctor had never heard of a burns from a fire of this nature and also advised me we were lucky to not be in the burn unit with eye injuries and/or scarring.

My son is still in pain and his lips are blistered, cracked, and bleeding.

I will be notifying the Consumer Products Safety commission and the store where I purchased the candle of this incident as well as tell our story on Facebook. I have found at least one other similar story on YouTube that actually has video of the same type of flash fire we had.

It is horrible that the most predominant memory of Halloween 2011 will be of the burns and trauma the fire your candle causes our family.

Please take your candle off the market to prevent another fire and potential resulting injuries from occurring to another unsuspecting child.

    Sincerely, [redacted]
