  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 2, 2016, sent to the company Feb 11, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2016

The product, in the report: Simply Calphalon Nonstick 7qt Dutch Oven, model 8787

Simply Calphalon Nonstick 7qt Dutch oven, Model 8787. While using the Simply Calphalon 7qt dutch oven to cook a pound of cubed beef chuck in 2 quarts of broth this past Sunday, January 31, 2016, the tempered glass lid shattered with a loud “bang” about an hour after cooking began. It did not break apart, rather it stayed as a single unit but the glass was thoroughly broken into hundreds of interlocking bits between one and two tenths of an inch across. At first, my wife and I did not understand what had happened and thought the pattern on the lid was due to condensation from the simmering liquid below. On examining the underside of the lid, however, we realized it was broken and the underside was gritty with very finely broken glass. We then threw the food out because it was probably contaminated with the finely broken glass. We have been using the pot and lid for about four months since we bought it last fall. The pot and lid had been at room temperature before cooking and the lid was not exposed to direct flame or hit in any way with a sharp object.

The product, in the report: Simply Calphalon, Made in China, 1611 3 qt. stainless steel fry pan, approx 11 1/2 “ diameter. 3” deep. with clear glass lid

I was cooking dinner in my Simply Calphalon, 1611, 3qt. stainless steel pan with glass lid. The heat was not high because I was making a mix of seafood and garlic in cream sauce. I took off the lid and rested it against the side of the pan with the other edge on the top of the stove surface (not on the burner). I left it there for a while while I was still in the kitchen cleaning up and was surprised with a big “pop” sound and there was a hole that was blown out of the glass lid and it was cracked into many pieces. I do have digital pictures on my camera if you need to see them to verify what happened.
