On 7/10/23, I purchased a Rubbermaid Brilliance Glass Food Storage Containers, 8 Cup Food Containers with Lids, 2 Pack (4 Pieces Total), BPA Free and Leak Proof from Amazon.com. Today (3/9/25), I experienced a serious safety issue. The packaging states it is oven-safe up to 450F, but when I used it at exactly 450F for fewer than 20 minutes today, the glass exploded into thousands of small pieces. Fortunately, no one was injured, but this poses a significant safety hazard. I want to make sure the public is aware and no one else experiences the same thing.

The product, in the report: Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids Glass Food Storage Container, 11.5 Cup, Racer Red I have 2 other identical bowls (that I won’t use) but I don ‘t see a number on them.

I had a Rubbermaid glass bowl with lid. It is said to be microwave and oven safe. I took some frozen chicken breasts and put it into a room temperature Rubbermaid glass bowl. I put it in the microwave and set it on defrost. I let it run for less than 3 min, because I didn’t want it to defrost, just to loosen it up, so it could fit into the pot in which I was going to cook.

After about 2 1/2 minutes I took the bowl out to see if anything had loosened up at all. As I was taking it out there was a loud “pop” and it literally exploded in my hands.

Small pieces of glass were everywhere. (I should have taken a picture, but I was concerned about my kids and dogs getting cut) I had 3 fingers that were bleeding from the glass.

Glass pieces were at the farthest, 12 feet away from where it exploded.

It took hours to clean up, but luckily nobody was blinded. (it seems that would be possible, if the kids were over there and at the level of the bowl when it exploded)

The product, in the report: Rubbermaid Glass food storage containers with easy find lids

My daughter received a set of Rubbermaid Glass food storage containers with easy find lids as a wedding gift. After opening this gift, she stacked the containers and set them next to some other gifts. The next morning, I found that the container on top of the larger bottom container had shattered. Pieces of glass and tiny glass fragments were scattered around the area. Nothing fell on top of the stack, and the containers above and below were not damaged. This doesn’t make sense to me, but it was obviously a dangerous occurrence. I’m glad no people or pets were around at the time.

The product, in the report: Rubbermaid glass container

My friend put a Glass Rubbermaid container of oatmeal on the counter top after two minutes in the microwave. 30 seconds later the container exploded into hundreds of shards. They bounced off a wall 5 feet away and then along a corridor 6 feet.

If my friend had not left the kitchen she would have been seriously injured.

I have reported this to Bed Bath and Beyond. They do not think this is a problem here in Naples Florida but I see from your reports this has happened before.

I looked up the Internet about the safety of these containers and it does say not to put them on the counter top directly after the microwave. I never knew that beforehand. I do not remember seeing it on the box when I bought them.

Even so the force of the explosion was way beyond what would be expected from a household product.

Rubbermaid has said on your site they do not believe this to be a major issue.

If my partner had been in the kitchen it would be a major medical issue and lawsuit.

I am going to dump all rubbermaid products in my home in case I have a guest who may not get the warning I am about to send out to all my friends and put rubbermaid glassware on a counter top after a microwave.

  8. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Nov 7, 2012, sent to the company Nov 21, 2012, published by CPSC Dec 6, 2012

The product, in the report: Rubbermaid Glass with easy find lids food storage containers 5.5 cups #7N64

On November 1, 2012, I was injured by Rubbermaid glass with easy find lids food storage containers. The numbers on the container were: 5.5 cups 7N64 1.3L 16

I heated up some leftovers (rice & beans) in one of the glass containers in the microwave for 2 min. (I took the glass container directly from the fridge to the microwave). I left the container in the microwave for a couple minutes to cool off and then removed the container from the microwave. When I removed the container there was no damage.

I sat down to work at the computer while eating at the same time, unfortunately not looking at the food on my spoon. Towards the end of my meal, I took a bite and then had a severe stabbing pain in the back of my throat. I thought some type of chicken bone or something like that got stuck at the back of my throat (although there was no chicken in the dish). It turns out it was 1.5-2” long shard of glass, which I had to dislodge from my throat with my tongue and fingers. Heavy bleeding immediately occurred.

I immediately called the doctor wondering if I should go to the ER, but since it seemed that the glass was out they asked me to come to their office immediately. With my mouth bleeding, choking on blood and no one around to help me, I had to grab my 2 year old daughter and drive myself to the doctor. After the doctor looked at my throat, it appeared there was no more glass in my throat although it was likely that I had swallowed some glass as well. I have cuts in my throat as well as on my tongue that are very painful and has caused swelling. It’s painful for me to swallow, talk, eat and drink.

After I got home, I took pictures of the glass container and I also took a photo of the shard that got lodged in my throat. We had these containers for about 10 months, taking extremely good care of them. When loading the dishwasher, we are ALWAY sure that the containers are not touching anything else to prevent chips or damage. So somehow after taking the container out of the microwave and starting to eat, the container chipped off a huge chard of glass into my food. The container was NOT bumped or dropped or damaged in any way. It seems that in the process of microwaving the container, which is labeled microwave safe, that the glass was not durable enough to withstand the heat. I have the container if you need me to ship it to you.

The scary part is this was the SECOND time a chip like this has occurred. A few months ago, I was heating leftovers from the fridge. After removing the container from the microwave, a small chip of glass broke off into my food. The container was NOT bumped, dropped or damaged. Luckily I noticed it right away and tossed the container, thinking it was just a defect to this container. So this is TWO containers that had the same problem.

Not only was this an extremely scary situation for me, but it scares me to think that this situation could have been much worse if the glass got stuck further down in my throat where I couldn’t pull it out. It scares me to think that this could have happened to my 2 year old and it scares me to think that this could happen to anyone else!! This is a serious health hazard, which my doctor said I need to notify the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
