Made Aug 8, 2024, sent to the company Aug 13, 2024, published by CPSC Aug 27, 2024

The product, in the report: Stainless steel pot/pan sets created for Macy’s. [REDACTED]

    1. When and where did you purchase the item? The frying pan was purchased from Macy’s online store approximately two years ago. 2. When did the injury occur? The injury occurred on July 9, 2024. 3. What were you doing with the pan when the injuries occurred? My wife was cooking mushrooms for our 11-month-old daughter. During the process, a metal part of the frying pan suddenly exploded with a loud pop sound. 4. Do you still have the pan in your possession? Yes, we still have the pan in our possession for further inspection if necessary. 5. Describe the physical injuries caused: The explosion caused potential hearing damage and psychological trauma. My wife is suffering from uncertain ear damage and fears it might be permanent. My daughter has been very fussy and may also need a hearing test to ensure she is okay. 6. What type of medical treatment have the injured had? My wife had a primary care physician (PCP) visit and has been referred to an otolaryngologist (expected to be Aug 8 2024) for further evaluation. My daughter will be seen by her pediatrician within a week. 7. Is anyone still undergoing treatment? Yes, both my wife and daughter are still undergoing treatment. My wife is awaiting her otolaryngologist appointment, and my daughter will soon have her pediatrician evaluation. 8. Are there any serious or life-long injuries? It is currently uncertain if there are any permanent injuries. We are still in the process of medical evaluations to determine the extent of the damage. 9. Did you contact Macy’s about the pan? Yes, I contacted Macy’s and their third-party claims administrator, [REDACTED] , immediately after the incident. 10. If so, what did they say? Macy’s and [REDACTED] have acknowledged the incident and requested photos of the pan. They informed us that Macy’s is self-insured regarding general liability claims and there is no medical payment program available. They have asked for further inspection of the pan and suggested that I may need to seek legal representation if pursuing a claim.

UPDATED ON 8/9/2024: [I want to emphasize the following.

I found multiple reviews and pictures on Macy’s website that looked quite similar to our incident (screenshots uploaded on the report). These reviews indicate that our case is not an isolated issue, suggesting a possible defect in the product. Furthermore, Macy’s has responded to several of these reviews, indicating their awareness of the problem. Despite being aware of the issue through customer feedback, it appears Macy’s did not take adequate steps to address the defect or issue a recall.]

The product, in the report: Tools of the Trade 8 inch stainless steel pan. There is also a 9.5 inch pan as well with similar rivets. Macy’s own brand. Apparently there was a recall of [REDACTED] branded from Macy’s that was recalled for same issue. May be same manufacturer with different branding or marketed product. I have no receipt nor know when this was first produced and what it cost originally. This was a gift.

Tools of Trade 8 inch pan rivet blew off. Luckily nobody was hurt.

The product, in the report: Tools of the Trade cookware. 8inch fry pan

While cooking with the tools of the trade 8inch fry pan I heard a loud pop like a gun shot. The metal piece on the inside of the pan that covers the screw came flying off and landed on the counter a few inches from where my daughter was seated. This was a hot projectile. I can only thank God that it did not fly into her face or eye.

Made Nov 18, 2015, sent to the company Nov 27, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 11, 2015

The product, in the report: Tools of the Trade 8” frying pan

I was making a grilled cheese sandwich using a Tools of the Trade 8 inch frying pan. I had butter in the pan over a medium heat on a burner of my gas stove. I had cooked one side and I turned the sandwich over to the other side. A minute or two after turning it over there suddenly was some smoke and then a loud bang and something went flying by me and hit the floor a number of feet away. I found out that one of the round metal covers on one of the screws attaching the handle to the pan had exploded off the pan. I’m very lucky that it didn’t hit me.

These pans should not be sold and the manufacturer should be notified.

(I’m reporting this late because I sent this same information to Macy’s (where I bought the pan) to a California address (that I thought was their head location), but my letter was returned unopened as a bad address.)

The product, in the report: Macy web id Web ID: 661339, Tools of the Trade Basics Essentials Stainless Steel Cookware, 12 Piece Set

The tools of the trade basic cookware set that is sold by [REDACTED] gave me a 2nd degree burn. I have been out of work for a week and I do not know when I will be able to return back to work. The handle from the pot broke off of the pot that I was boiling water in as I was taking the pot from the stove to the counter. The hot scolding water spilled on to my leg and as a result I have a 2nd degree burn. It is very painful and I can only walk for a short period of time, before I begin suffer severe pain. Other have stated that they also had problems with the handle breaking off since 2010 until now. I do not want anyone else to suffer what I am currently going through.

The product, in the report: 12 inch Belgique Hard Anodized non-stick pan with Silicone Handles. Serial Number 30889 (stamped on bottom)

Have been using a 12inch “Belgique Hard Anodized” Non-Stick Frying Pan with Silicone handles for several years now. This is a “Tools of the Trade” product from Macy’s.

Last night, cooking over less than medium heat the handle got as hot as the pan. I let the pan cool down and then reheated. Sure enough, it did it again and I lightly burned my thumb! Only the outermost tip of the handle remained relatively cool.

Whatever was in the handle acting as an insulator has apparently deteriorated and/or melted. The pan is NOT discolored and there is no indication of abnormal wear. Please note: I have never used highest heat with this pan, maybe 80% of burner strength at most.

I will now get rid of the 10inch pan also -no problems yet, but I can’t trust it.
