The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: 14” Steel Wok with non-stick coating “Joyce Chen 22-9938, Pro Chef 14 Inch 10 Piece Excalibur Non-Stick Wok Set” purchased on July 1, 2017 from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Joyce-Chen-22-9938-Excalibur-Non-Stick/dp/B000684DUE)

This complaint is about a “Joyce Chen 22-9938, Pro Chef 14 Inch 10 Piece Excalibur Non-Stick Wok Set” that I purchased on July 1, 2017 from Amazon. (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000684DUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_dp_T2_unMBzbJYP5NAG)

As a volunteer firefighter and a professional distiller, I am very familiar with fire/burn hazards, and I state with confidence that this is a dangerous product that should not be used. The company should issue a recall immediately. On only the second use, all three rivets holding the handle on failed. There was only 8oz of food, so it was not a weight issue. I was frying tofu, and when they failed, the body of the wok went flying across the stove, scattering hot tofu everywhere, including on my hand (leaving several burns). Had there been more oil in the wok, this could easily have started a grease fire and/or caused severe burns.

Upon closer inspection of the rivets, they are made of soft metal and can be easily deformed with a small pliers. Although the gauge of the rivets is sufficient for the sheer load, the secondary heads are far too weak for the tension load when the wok is manipulated via the long handle. Indeed, the rivets failed so completely at the secondary heads that there is no visible evidence left that the rivets were ever even closed. The weakness of these rivets is a critical design flaw.

Though painful, the burns that I suffered when the rivet failure caused the product to rapidly disassemble were only superficial wounds. The next person might not be as fortunate. It is only a matter of time before this wok causes a fire or serious injury. Please issue a recall before this happens.
