First aid Made Nov 28, 2022, sent to the company Nov 30, 2022, published by CPSC Dec 14, 2022
The product, in the report: Cuisinart 8” stainless skillet (model 722-20)
I was using a Cuisinart 8” stainless skillet (model 722-20) to cook on low heat. When I reached in with a spatula, I heard a loud “POP” noise like a gunshot and was in shock.
After I came to, I realized my thumb was in pain and lacerated from penetrating trauma and there was a small bit of metal that had shot across the room, leaving a divot in the wall some 12 ft. away. My ears were still ringing over an hour later.
From what I can tell, there is a metal cap on one of the rivets which was turned into a projectile and bounced off of my thumb before still having enough energy to make said divot. I assume a small amount of moisture was behind it and it expanded until it exploded (like popcorn).

The product, in the report: 8” skillet
This morning a Cuisinart pan I was using suffered a rather dramatic failure. One of the stainless steel caps which cover the handle rivets explosively ejected itself during the normal act of heating the pan on the stovetop to prepare an omelet. Fortunately it was pointed towards the backsplash so nobody sustained injury, but the loud explosion and hot metal caroming around produced no small consternation in our household.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Contour Stainless 5-Quart Dutch Oven with Glass Cover
The submitter is reporting the product for posing a laceration hazard.
He was making soup and placed the pot on the burner then set it to medium heat. The submitter indicated that he has an electric range. Approximately an hour later he lowered the heat and placed the lid on the pot. About five minutes later he heard a loud noise and when he walked in the kitchen he noticed pieces of glass on the stove, counter and floor. He indicated that the lid almost completely shattered and there is was a hole about 5 inches wide in the center of the lid. He had to throw out the soup because pieces of glass also fell inside.
He mentioned that he had used the pot before but this was his first time using the lid.
He visited the retailer and reported the incident. He was offered a refund for the return of the product.
He then contacted the firm and reported the incident. He was asked to obtain the product info and report the incident on the firm’s website. He is waiting to hear back from the retailer’s store manager who is supposed to provide him with the product info and then he plans to file a report with the firm.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart 10” non-stick skillet; Model 622-24
This is a Cuisinart skillet. There are metal covers for the fastener attaching the handle. I’ve used this skillet for at least a year. I had the skillet on medium heat. I was a few feet away from the skillet. I heard a loud noise like a bullet firing and something ricocheting off the walls around the stove. I found the metal cover, dented, that had exploded off the fastener and struck at least two tiled walls at high speed. This easily could have blinded someone close to the skillet. I reported this to Cuisinart, sent photos and repeatedly asked them to report it to you. They will not answer my question, so I’m reporting it myself.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart 3.5 Quart saute pan, model #733-24H
I own a Cuisinart 3.5 Quart saute pan, model #733-24H. I am sure I have used this pan hundreds of times. Earlier this month I was cooking dinner in my kitchen with my daughter. I was using this pan to cook several slices of bacon on my gas range over medium heat, as I have done many times before. After about 5 minutes into the cooking process, we heard a very loud explosion, a sound I imagine a gun makes when it is fired. We then heard several crashing sounds in quick succession. We had no idea what happened. After turning off the stove and searching the kitchen for at least half an hour, I found the cause. A cap covering a rivet in the inside of the pan had burst off and ricocheted through my kitchen. Luckily, neither my daughter nor I were in the line of the cap’s trajectory, and no one was injured. We have not used any Cuisinart cookware since this incident.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart chefs classic stainless steel 11 piece cookware set with cover 77-11G
I bought a Cuisinart stainless steel cookware set from Target on 6/14/18. The second time I used the cookware on 7/11/18, the glass lid shattered everywhere - on the stove, the counters, and onto the floor. I am still finding the tiny shards. I was simmering sausages. Fortunately I was not near the stove or I would have been injured.
Target refunded the purchase price.
I was horrified.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jul 12, 2016, sent to the company Jul 20, 2016, published by CPSC Aug 5, 2016
The product, in the report: 10” skillet
I was cooking, using my Cuisinart 10” skillet (model # 722-24) over medium heat when I heard an extremely loud “pop.” I asked my children (standing nearby) if they were OK and my daughter said, “Mom, look at the pan.” I saw that the rivet, attaching handle to pan, had popped open. We were fortunate that the rivet did not dislodge and hurt anyone, though I continued to have ear pain for hours after the incident.
Called Cuisinart and they want me to return the skillet to them and they will send a replacement. From what I’ve read, this is not the first incident with their skillets. Extremely dangerous - a recall is in order here.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Skillet - 8 inch - MODEL 722-20 - 18/10 stainless steel - made in Indonesia
I had just cooked breakfast in a Cuisinart small skillet and took the final pancake out of the pan, then moved the pan further back on the stove. All of a sudden, I heard a loud ‘pop’ that sounded like a gunshot, and something hit me in the shoulder. However, I had horrible pain in my ears, and was holding both ears due to the pain from the loud sound. I had immediate ‘ringing’ in the ears and a red mark on my shoulder where I had been ‘hit.’ I had no idea what had happened and started looking around the room to see what had happened. I spoke with my friend and she asked me to check the walls and windows for bullet holes. (It had been THAT LOUD.) Then she asked me to take a look at my pan. She had heard about a recall on pans that had parts that went flying while cooking. I looked, and sure enough, one of the rivet covers from the inside of the pan (that holds the handle in place) was missing. I could not find it anywhere, though. I immediately called Cuisinart to discuss the incident with them. They had no resolution and said someone would call me back in 2-3 days. They did not call back; About an hour after my call, I was walking through my living room and found the rivet cover that had flown off the pan. It had traveled over 15 feet from the stove to its resting place in the living room.

The product, in the report: a small fry/saute pan
I am writing about this pan - Cuisinart model 722-20 skillet 8” (20cm) stainless steel V#16420. This is the second time I have had trouble with this kind of pan. A number of years ago I returned my first pan in this line for the same very serious problem. I have now had the same problem with the pan Cuisinart sent as a replacement.
A few weeks ago while we were using this pan, there were two pops like gunshots. A little later in various parts of the kitchen I found the two round covers of the round rivets? or such that attach the handle to the pan itself. I looked carefully at the pan and saw that indeed yes, the caps of the round rivets on the inside of the pan were gone. We got lucky. Nobody was hit by these two caps when they exploded off the pan. But there were two children as well as several adults in the kitchen and if anyone had been hit by one of these exploding caps they could have been injured, blinded, even killed depending on where it hit them.
What is truly disturbing is that this is the second time a pan of this line has done this in my house. How many other times has this happened?

The product, in the report: Skillet
09/23/2015 - The consumer was toasting a piece of bread on the skillet. Approximately three minutes after she turned the stove on, she heard a loud bang and also felt pain on her jaw. A part of one of the caps that covers the rivets on the skillet’s handle shot off and this is what hit the consumer in her jaw. The consumer indicates that the diameter of the cap is about half inch. The consumer stated she thought she had been shot.
The injury did not bleed a lot as the piece that blew off cut but also cauterized the wound since the skillet was burning. The consumer iced the wound. She indicates that it inflamed to about the size of an egg. The consumer believes she will have a permanent scar on her face because of the accident.
09/24/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained what had happened. The representative she spoke informed the consumer they would file a report and send it to the correct department and that she would receive a call from them.
09/25/2015 - The consumer received a call back from the manufacturer. The representative she spoke to apologized for the inconvenience and asked that she send the skillet back to them, as well as she go online and choose what product she wanted to receive. The consumer told the representative she would not send the skillet back nor get any of their products as she did not feel safe with them.
The consumer has no injuries or previous incidents to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard to consumers.

I have asked the company to replace and they tell me to use a pot holder or follow the instructions in the booklet it does not help
I have been burned in the past not severely but would have been if I had not thrown the lid down. I can’t recall dated for us as I have had the pans about 5 years. I did not use them often as I was ill for lot of the time. I am well now and cooking and experiencing this problem. .

The product, in the report: Cuisinart small pot
I was using a small pot by Cuisinart to heat some water to make tea. After adding some tea leafs, I turned back to do something else in the kitchen until I heard a gun fire like sound. I turned back and saw tea was all over the range and gas was still on with some water and some tea still inside the pot.
I had no clue what caused it all and decided to drain out the water. I noticed a shining object in the sink and tried to retrieve but it went through the drain. I then noticed that a piece of metal that covers the screws inside the pot was missing, which I believe caused a little explosion.
I know for fact that had I not turned away after adding tea to hot water, the hot water would have splashed over my face.
Making tea is very routine for me and this has never happened before. I would like to request the contents of this pot are inspected to ensure it’s safe to use it to cook hot meals and it can sustain hot temperatures.

I was frying using my Cuisinart 8” skillet, when there was a loud bang, like the sound of a 22 cal. rifle. I heard something metal ricochet around the kitchen. I saw that the rivets holding the handle to the pan actually have a thin metal cover. One of these exploded, and flew around the room. If you own this pan return it to the manufacturer, and report them to the appropriate Federal agency.

The product, in the report: 8” frying pan
As my wife was preparing grilled cheese sandwiches in our Cuisinart frypan on med high heat, one of the rivets shot off of the pan with a loud report like a gun, becoming a very hot projectile of metal. After richocheting off the range hood landed on the counter on a plastic bag where it became lodged. After coming my wife down and taking a few pictures, I contacted the customer service department of Cuisinart where the young lady told me to send the pan to them and they would determine whether the pan was defective and they would replace it with they’re lifetime warranty. When I told her that my wife and I were concerned that it could happen with any of the rest of the set she remarked that since there was no injury that was all she could do. I told her to have her superiors call me and assure me this could not happen with the rest of the cookware set. I have heard no response from them. I searched the Internet to see if this was a fluke and found other instances of Cuisinart cookware rivets exploding off as they were being used. I believe the company is aware of this and should stop producing dangerous products that could potentially hurt someone or worse. The other defective products had different model numbers which make me think this is widespread throughout their product lines. Their failure to reply or communicate shows a lack of concern or responsibility.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart stainless steel 3 Qt. (2.8 L) pour saucepan (comes with cover) Model #7193-20PM v#17882 (or possibly the Wolfgang Puck 18-10 stainless steel 4 qt. saucepan (comes with cover; made in China) 0108
I was boiling water to cook pasta in a Cuisinart stainless steel 3 Qt. (2.8 L) pour saucepan (comes with cover) Model #7193-20PM v#17882* (or possibly the Wolfgang Puck 18-10 stainless steel 4 qt. saucepan (comes with cover; made in China) 0108*. As I was stirring the water, my spoon hit one of the rivets that attach the handle to the pot and stick out into the interior of the pot. This caused my spoon to lurch forward splashing boiling water onto my abdomen by my navel, burning me. My first reaction was to get it off me so I immediately swiped once at the spot causing a piece of my skin approximately the size of a nickel to slip off. The incident happened some time back, unfortunately and I cannot really even estimate when. However, on several subsequent occasions, I have been nearly injured yet again.

My husband was warming oil to cook eggs when the stainless steal cap the covers the bolt of the handle of my cuisine art pot exploded. The product, in the report: Cuisinart 12” Skillet
Family and I were staying in a condominium at the Hyatt Escala Lodge in Park City, Utah for a ski vacation. I got the 12” Cuinisart skillet out to fry some hambergers. Two days earlier I had commented to my wife that I would not buy that type of cookware because one of the four small aluminum covers on the rivits that held the handle and additional stablizing grip on the opposite side was missing. I did not think twice why one would be missing but, in hindsight I now know.
I started the [REDACTED] range and then place the burgers in the pan. I turned around to do something at the sink and suddenly (3-4 minutes)it sounded like a gunshot or M80 firecracker exploded. I heard something hit the ceiling then the wall then the glass window and bounce around on the floor. I turned to the stove but nothing looked out of order. I checked the oven where I had turned on the broiler to toast the buns but nothing was out of order there. I did remove the burgers from the heat and went into the dining room to see if I could find what I heard bounce around on the floor. I then found the small rivit cover which is just shy of 1/2” in diameter (see attachet picture) on the floor.
I picked up the piece and could not believe it. I realized what had happened and thought how lucky I was to not have been hit buy this projectile. This piece shot out of the skillet like a gun. I thought it was maybe because I had first had the gas on high which heated the outside of the skillet and may have caused the aluminum pieces to expand quicker than the rest of the skillet. I turned the heat down and placed the skillet back on the flame.
Approximately two minutes later a second rivit cover did exactly the same thing. At this time the burgers were finished so I removed them and turned off the heat. I later washed the skillet and took it to the management of the lodge to explain what had happened and suggested they remove all of this cookware from their condos due to liability issues.
I later decided to do a bit of sleuthing on the internet and sure enough, I ran across two incidents where the exact same thing happened. One interesting fact from the other two occurances I found on line was that one happened on a [REDACTED] range as well.
Considering how one hovers over things cooking on the stove this is extremely dangerous to have a hot metal projectile coming from a frying pan. It could easily cause extreme damage to one’s eye or worse.

January 5th, 2012 around 12:30PM
Caller is reporting an Incident w/a Cuisinart Pan while making grilled cheese sandwiches when a rivet blew off of the pan and flew up, hit the microwave and fell back to the stove.
Noise was extremely loud.causing caller to have a headache and ringing ears yesterday but not into today. Would describe as an explosion, like a firecracker.
Caller had been cooking on gas stove in 12” Aluminum pan only around 7 minutes when rivet flew off of pan. She did know what happened until after examining the pan and finidng the rivet cover.
Her husband came running into kitchen to find what had happened.
Caller had already turned fire out, they checked to see if any damage had been done to the back of stove or areas around it.
Caller would like to alert the public, request recall of pan. She does not want another Cuisinart pan, afriad the problem may be with all of their pans.

The product, in the report: 10 inch saute pan
Approximately three years ago, I purchased from Crate and Barrel two saute pans made by Cuisinart. One is 10 inches and the other 8.5. Today as I was cooking several chicken breasts in the 10 inch-pan, I heard a loud bang similar in volume to a car back-firing. I thought there was something wrong with my stove and immediate turned it off. It was then that I noticed that one of the rivets on my pan had blown almost completely off. I shudder to think what might have happened if the rivet had come off completely and shot across the room, as I’m sure it took an enormous amount of force for it to dislodge as it did. The pan has always been used on a gas or propane fired stove and has never been mistreated. I have occasionally put it in the oven to keep something warm, but it has never gotten overly hot.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Chef’s Classic Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set, specifically the 8 inch skillet (Model# 722-20).
In reference to Cuisinart 77-10 Chef’s Classic Stainless Steel Cookware set.
Under medium to high heat (I was sautéing some mushrooms), one of the handle rivets suddenly exploded (sounded like a gun shot) and the hot rivet ricocheted off my arm and hot oil went everywhere. Aside from the burn to my arm, my wife and I lost hearing for about a minute. I do not have a very high BTU stove and this was obviously a result of a highly dangerous and defective product. Other reports on the Internet lead me to believe that this happens often to this cookware.
