  1. No one hurt

Made Apr 19, 2017, sent to the company Jun 5, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 19, 2017

The product, in the report: 2 Quart stainless steel sauce pan made by Calphalon. Product is Kitchen Essentials by Calphalon, model # 8702.

Sauce pan has a silicon sleeve grip over the stainless steel handle. Over time the sleeve grip on the handle becomes loose and rotates freely regardless of pressure that is applies on the handle. The pan size is 2 quarts, I was boiling potatoes on a gas stove top and when it came time to drain the boiling water I was carrying the pan to the sink with my hand on the silicon grip on the handle when the handle and pan rotated in the pan grip, turning the pan upside-down and dumped boiling water. The boiling water just missed my leg and my grandson that was standing next to me.

The product, in the report: It’s a dutch oven. It is a pot with pour spouts and a lid with straining holes.

I purchased a Simply Calphalon Easy System Nonstick5 QT Dutch Oven & Cover, a Newell Rubbermaid Company. The UPC is 1831240 or 016853055999.

I purchased it from the AAFES in Kaiserslautern, Germany on a US military installation. It notes on the box the ease of draining pasta or vegetables with the pour spouts ad straining holes. I made pasta and boiling water spouted out of the pour spouts like a geyser. I contacted the company and notified them that water spouted from their product while I was cooking and that I was luckily unharmed. Their solution was to replace the lid. I sent the original lid and they sent me a lid with a shallower lip. That did not solve the issue. When they sent me a link to complete a survey regarding my satisfaction with how they handled my complaint, I again indicated that their product was extremely unsafe and that I was going to submit a complaint to this agency. They haven’t contacted me.

The product, in the report: 16”x13” Classic non-stick roaster with a non-stick rack

11/27/2014 The consumer’s wife prepared an approximate twenty-pound turkey and placed it in the roaster on the rack. The consumer tried placing the turkey inside the oven and the rack moved approximately three inches towards the consumer. The consumer’s wife screamed thinking the consumer was going to fall but the consumer was able to hug the roaster, thus breaking the fall.

The consumer’s wife proceeded to cook the turkey in their old roaster. The consumer believes the rack should be secure so that it does not move around. The consumer indicates that had the turkey been hot out of the oven, the consumer would have burned himself when falling.

The consumer believes this product poses a safety and burn hazard.

The consumer has no injuries to report.

The product, in the report: Sauté Pan

A few years ago, I was given a Calphalon sauté pan as a gift. Over the past couple of years, however, it has become more difficult and less safe to use. The pan has a metal handle that is bolted to the pan, itself. This metal handle has a thick, rubber sleeve/sheath that slides over the it, allowing it to be used without a pot holder. Unfortunately, as one sautés - shaking the food back and forth and flipping the contents using wrist action, the rubber sheath can and does slide off. Sometimes it’s gradual, so it can be noticed and simply slid back on the tang. On other occasions, however, the pan just slides off of the sheath and goes flying across the stovetop, countertop, or through the open air.
