  1. Hurt, care not known

Made Jul 14, 2024, sent to the company Jul 23, 2024, published by CPSC Aug 6, 2024

The product, in the report: Toastmaster 12-cub digital touchscreen drip coffee maker, black, model tm-131cm

The timer on the programable part froze at one time after a power failure. Manually made coffee and figured could program it after work. It would normally turn off the burner below the craft after 2 hours. In the evening when I went to empty the grounds I burnt myself as the burner was still heating the craft for 12+ hours and had dried up all the coffee remaining in the craft. Contacted the manufacture who suggested unplugging and plugging back in that did no resolve the fact the timer would not program or work. They have sent me a replacement unit which would allow me to program the time and the timer appears to be working so far. The unit was placed into service the end of April 2024 and failed to function as designed in July 2024.

[REDACTED] was the one who was lightly burnt by the super heated coffee grounds. The craft was very hot, unplugged the unit. Toastmaster 12-cup digital touchscreen drip coffee maker model TM-131CM

The product, in the report: Toastmaster Electric Coffee Maker 12 Cups (Dollar General ITEM01166001) Black plastic with glass carafe. Non digital, one button operation. Model Toastmaster Electric Coffee Maker 12 Cups TM-127KCM

I bought an electric 12 cup Toastmaster coffee maker with a swing out basket from Dollar General ( https://www.dollargeneral.com/toastmaster-electric-coffee-maker-12-cups.html ). I ran a brew cycle using only water as the manufacturer recommended and had no problem. However, when I tried to brew coffee in it, the coffee did not flow out from the basket fast enough and overflowed the filter, nearly spilling out the top of the basket. I thought the coffee was just taking a long time to brew and decided to utilize the pause feature (meaning, the coffee is supposed to stop coming out of the basket while you poor a cup) but the coffee continued to flow from the basket. I wasn’t expecting that so I opened the top and saw that the reason my coffee carafe was only half full was because it was all still in the brew basket. I emptied the carafe and basket and proceeded to attempt cleaning the grounds out of the basket by pouring water through it with the carafe in place. The water barely came out of the bottom, letting me know that the basket design was defective. It does not allow free flow of the liquid from the basket to the carafe, nor does the flow stop when you remove the carafe allowing the plunger to spring back into place. It appears that the weight of the wet grounds, combined with the heat of the coffee, causes the rubber stopper and/or spring to fail. This is dangerous in so many ways. First, you have the overflow hazard, then there is the burn/spill hazard when trying to utilize the pause feature. Then there is the added hazard of an electrical short if the liquid enters the bottom of the appliance when the carafe is removed.
