The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 21, 2019, sent to the company Dec 19, 2019, published by CPSC Jan 6, 2020

The product, in the report: Brand new, never before used 2019 Christmas themed “heat resistant” oven mitt by the brand “Kitchen Outfitters” and the company Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. The outer body is cotton with a polyester inner lining. The heat resistant portion is on the palm, is black, and seems to be either rubber or a synthetic like neoprene. Outer design is festive with a Christmas tree and text overlay that says “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. The glove is made in China and the RN # is 22195. The packaging doesn’t give a max temperature but only describes it as “For right or left hand use. Heat Resistant. Comfortable and durable.”

30 minutes ago I was baking in cast iron skillet at just under 475 degrees and needed to pull it out without cooling down. I used a brand new “heat resistant” oven mitt from the “Kitchen Outfitters” line from Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. Within 10 seconds the glove began smoking with the pan handle in my hand, and I quickly removed the glove. The “heat resistant” black material on the palm of the glove (unsure if synthetic or rubber) had melted down to the polyester lining at the pressure points of my forefinger and thumb by the time I had taken it off, and it left gooey residue on my cast iron skillet which has by now hardened onto it. I immediately checked the glove to see if I had missed a warning about a heat threshold/maximum temperature but there’s none at all on either the gloves or the packaging. Fortunately, my mind and reflexes were quick enough to catch it before it could begin melting the polyester lining against my hand, and, though I could feel the heat through the mitten, as far as I can tell at the moment it hasn’t left any burns or blisters. If I had been any slower however, I can only imagine what could have happened and I’m concerned about the complete lack of information on the packaging about either a limit to the “heat resistance” or the kind of material the “heat resistant” portion is made from because I believe it could seriously harm/injure someone else.
