The product, in the report: Pampered Chef Ice Cream Scoop
CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISION May 19, 2014 Who are we: Consumer Type of product: Kitchen Utensil
Incident description: PAMPERED CHEF ICE CREAM SCOOP These gadgets work great, we have three of them. My Wife was washing dishes in the kitchen sink. After hand washing all the dishes, she picked up the utensils along with the scoop and placed them in the dish water. At this time the water was hardly warm. After less than a minute of washing the utensils, a violent explosion occurred. The soapy dish water was blasted into her eyes and then she realized that she could not hear. There were four of us in the room at the time and we were really startled. We could not figure out what had happened at first Then we happened to find a plastic cap and a steel disk on the couch across the room but still did not realize where they came from. She finally emptied the water from the sink and found that the end had blown out of the scoop handle. I took her to the local hospital emergency room where she was diagnosed with ruptured ear drums. The hospital discharge instructions recommended that she get an appointment with a local hearing specialist in about two weeks. She has now had hearing tests and evaluations in two, four and an upcoming appointment in six weeks to check for any improvements in her hearing. Since the blast she has not been able to watch TV because she cannot understand what is being said. She has extreme difficulty communicating on the phone because she cannot usually understand what she hears. To communicate in person, she must be in front facing the person and that person must be speaking in an elevated tone and slowly.

The product, in the report: Ice Cream Scoop
I went to wash the “The Pampered Chef Ice Cream Scoop” when all I heard was a very loud bang. The scoop had exploded. The bottom had flown across the room, threw water all the way up the window and cabinets. My right ear started feeling like everything was muffled, like someone was holding a thick towel against my head. My head started hurting and still does today and I felt sick to my stomach. I called my consultant and she asked if it was the old or new version of the scoop. I had two of them. I had received the replacement version and had thrown away the old one. But come to find out I still had one of each, an old one and a new one. I guess I should have gotten two replacements instead of one. Turns out it was the old one that exploded.
