The product, in the report: “Smeg Milk Frother, model [MFF01CRUS], serial number [2-955515-20328-0087-5158. Small countertop electric milk frothing appliance. Cream color. Purchased September 2020. Original unit was replaced by Smeg in July 2023 after the same failure. The replacement unit is the one involved in the most recent incident.
“I own a Smeg milk frother (Model: MFF01CRUS). The unit was plugged in but not in use when it emitted a loud pop followed by heavy smoke from the base. The burning smell was strong and the unit continued to smoke for several minutes after being unplugged. This is the second Smeg milk frother I have owned to fail in exactly this manner. The first unit caught fire in June 2023 and was replaced by Smeg. The replacement unit has now failed identically. There were no injuries, but the fire risk was significant in the 2023 incident I had nearly left the house, which could have resulted in a serious fire. Both units failed while simply plugged in, not during active use.”
