  1. No one hurt

Made Mar 16, 2022, sent to the company Mar 18, 2022, published by CPSC Apr 1, 2022

The product, in the report: Smart Home Volcano Microwave Steam Cleaner ( SKU#1DS1) purchased from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. Instruction sheet says made in China. Product is an ~ 7 inch tall blue plastic volcano representation, with white plastic ‘lava’ flowing down the top 1/3 of the cone.

    Dear Sirs:

I would like to take a few minutes to alert you to, what I consider, a very serious safety hazard.

I recently purchased one of the ‘Volcano Microwave Steam Cleaner’ items from Publisher’s Clearinghouse (SKU1DS1)

This morning I noticed that there had apparently been some food “popped” onto the sides and top of my microwave, and it looked as if it had dried on. I thought this would be the perfect time to try the Volcano Steam Cleaner. I added vinegar to the line, filled with water to the appropriate level, set the microwave cook time to 8 minutes and turned on the power.

Sometime after about 4 minutes, we started to see fumes coming out of the top, then about a minute later, we started to see flashes of blue/white light, followed by what looked like flames coming out of the top of the volcano. We thought this was fantastic! What a great idea! We got to enjoy a light show while steam cleaning our microwave.

We did a few other chores while we let the Volcano cool down, then, with wet sponge in hand, we opened the microwave to begin the wipe down. I opened the door and, WHAT!?? The microwave was spattered with wisps of carbon black, as was the Volcano. I carefully removed the Volcano and immediately saw that the bottom was 80% gone!!! (See attached photos) There were a few patches of plastic stuck to the [REDACTED] turntable, and almost unbelievably, two patches where it appeared the heat was sufficient to fuse material into the[REDACTED]!! This was a very hot fire! I am wondering whether this Volcano has some fine metal dust, such as aluminum, iron or zinc embedded in the plastic bottom?

In any case, there were NO notifications or warnings, that we would have to be concerned with having a fire in the microwave! Along with the obvious hazards presented by this device, I ended up having to spend nearly an hour scraping plastic reside of the turntables and having to clean the smeary Carbon black resides from all over the inside of the microwave.

This device is inherently unsafe, and I intend to bring it to the attention of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Please refund my purchase price for this terrible item!
